Excuse my ignorance (or my half asleep brain) who is Shaun?
Scarr is Shaun, no fear on the 10mm helicoil definitely works well on that small application I fixed the spark plug threads on a br 200 Stihl with one and it’s been good for 3-4 years now. Plugs been pulled a couple times too just to change it, on the regular size spark plugs I use an actual thread cert if I have room and anywhere else if I can but on the 10mm spark plug the helicoil is great.

I'm not doubting anyone's experiences with them nor even what youve said. My doubt is towards my luck. Things never seem to go as planned. I fear it would slip out and ruin the saw.

this saw in question was a ole professional loggers saw. He is 82 years old and is going blind. Ive already ported the jug and repaired the majority of it. My plan is to put it back into his hands for one last go about. using his massive saw horses of course. At the same time I'm going to have him compare the old with the new. I've started purchase of a ms462 for this purpose. From what I've gathered he started logging when he was 16 and only retired 2 years ago. Granted the last 5 years he was still working but not a full time kind of thing. He definitely needs to take his boots off and keep his feet raised from here on out.
Idk maybe Its a corny thing for me to do or something like that. but I think he would enjoy it.

I can also weld them shut and shoot a new hole, do it all the time for spark plug holes.

What about leaving it sealed shut? Like a 038 magnum. Would the welded puddle hold up? Or is the weld just to give you new metal to work with.

I do wonder how you think it can slip out, when the decomp or spark plug is in there it’s locking the wire in between the new tapped threads and plug. This whole assembly is under tension/ clamping force when you tighten the plug up really no place for it to go.
Only way it could really come out is if decomp rattled out and even then it would be tough. After you put wire in you could put a small dab of high temp loctite on the decomp when you put it in so it can’t vibrate out.

My journey with chainsaws is coming up on 1 complete year and during that period I've had 2 decomp valves blow off while using the saw. Granted the first was a holzfforma 372pro the second was a OEM ms660. In the middle of cutting seasoned oak the 660 goes from sounding clean in the cut to sounding like a 2jz with anti turbo lag. Luckily no damaged occured to either saw but I did have to stop out a fire with the 660 valve.

Did the valve come apart or rattle out? I’ve only had one decompression come apart and that was on my old 075
