@srcarr52 have you ever noticed a difference between say husky and stihl mag parts or any other mfr ??? Do they all act the same when welding just wondered if there was enough difference between alloys to see it in a weld. Or is it more like cast iron where it's a complete crap shoot if it will weld nice or not

I took it to the welder I always use who is really good and he couldn't get the cases on the 200T to stick very well at all , slightly but not right! I think different brands may weld differently.

and i have say , you must know what is the material for making the perfect weld , aluminum for coca cola cans and aluminum for aircrafts and aerospace , but peoples most of them say alu or magnesium and that all then the next day wonder why have cracks or why it break

I worked as a draftsman/project manager at an AISC Certified fabricator for 13.5yrs.
I would get bored sometimes and head out to the shop or service center.
I taught myself how to MIG & TIG, but never picked up a stick.
I can TIG carbon & stainless pretty good. Never got the hang of non-ferrous metals, but then I never really tried more than once.

The stick is the big judge and tell how good is the welder i mean the person not the machine

Yes. Stihl cases weld the worst, old homelites seem to be the best material.

Thank you. Az92a is what I kept comming back to. I need to do a little more looking locally but I think I'm looking at 80$ a pound. I sent a few pm's late last night and found out almost instantly your The guy to talk to about repairing mag cases. Even got a look at a cylinder head repair ( aluminum ) have to say very nice work After I get everything in front of me ill prolly try to pick your brain just a little
Shaun has worked magic to mag cases, aluminum jugs, and old bars for me. Also he knows how to twirl a bur in a jug to really make a saw sing. Stand up guy and none finer.

Ok so I finally got my hands on something that's allreaddy broked snuff that it dosent matter if I destroy it more gooder. The specimens ...... one oh44 recoil. My neighbor the "farmer" was running it with only 2 screws holding it on. It ripped apart for some reason..... ugh he just don't get it ...... the saw has been sitting for about a year now [emoji24] .I'm waiting on the mail guy to drop off the filler rod still but here's a before pic

Checked to see if its actually mag with a little vinegar. Middle of the shiny spot reacted almost instantly

While I applaud your repair efforts, I think a simple replacement would have been the best decision.
Some of the AM recoil housings are hard to tell apart from an OEM, especially when you put a STIHL badge on them.

Looking forward to seeing your progress

Oh.........

You might wanna make sure you're dead nuts with your repair. If it's off just a little bit, the starter pawls will hang up

I tried last fall to talk him into a aftermarket ....... it was a painful conversation ..... he won't have anything to do with a knockoff or a new stihl part price ..... anything that dosent look cracked or abused on feebay is rather pricy (to him) too..... I think he said stihl wants over a hundred bucks for one just in case anyone's curious eBay knockoff can b had for bout 10$ if you play the bid and wait game. Tonight I just walked over and took the recoil off . Told him "I'm welding it and if it works it's 5$ a stick for the filler rod prolly take two sticks" and he was good with that...... me thinks it was farmer logic or something in the water across the road ?

No doubt this is not the best way to go about the repair this is far from the best way. It's more about I want to play with welding magnesium castings and this is a magnesium casting. I bought a pound of filler well worth the education it will provide. I olny threw the gonna cost ya 5$ a stick out there to see if he would go for the AM recoil or not. Reality is he's my nighbor not just the guy across the road. I could care less about maybe at most 10$ worth of filler rod. It pales. In comparison to the 7018 I have riding around on half his equipment lol

That's gonna be a tough repair. Are you gonna weld all of those little ribs back on individually?

What size filler rod did you get?

It's gotta be really clean to weld. I find it even more finicky than aluminum.

I don't have the talent to weld that without burning through those ribs.

I applaud your efforts as well. Can't wait to see your results.

I have the 1/8 filler comming because it was almost 1/2 the price for some reason. 1/8 usually what I run with aluminum anyways. I plan on trying to weld in all the ribs ..... I might have to use a copper backing plate (if I can find them) . I'm very excited to try this and a little anxious as I haven't run hardly any tig in a very long time. Ill probibally bead blast and acetone wipe to clean it up

Practice bud. Mag is odd. Don't flow like aluminum and its dirty to weld.

I got a high tech square wave inverter. My TIG skills medium at best. I found difficult repairs difficult.

Practice on an old case first for sure.

@srcarr52 is very talented at it. When I used copper backing, he told me it was incorrect with Mag.
