Thoughts?

I should be able to give it a try end of week. That particular HD was stopped up badly.
I used an arctic cage when I made up a filter for my 661. Works just fine but Id like to get the spitback cage back in it.IMG_0727.JPGIMG_0726.JPG

Brian, K&N make filters, they run well at first but get dirty fast and are hard to clean, IMO the HD-2 is a much better choice.

If you get one year of milling out of a filter, i would not complain. That fine dust that results from milling is ten times worse than wood chips. That said, if the AM knock offs seem to be working better, I will have to give them a try.

I've been running my 046 & 460s w/o the spitback covers w/o any problems, but I'm going to start re installing them and see what happens. Always thought they would restrict air flow somewhat.
Now you tell me ,i ordered 4 k&n filters last week ,lol
Cleaning them is no problem ,i ran them on my atv's since 1990,i just spray some castrol super clean on them and hose them out and air dry over night ,then spray k&n oil on them ,they have a foam filter skin to put over them on the website,i am going to try the outerwears since i have them ,i ran those on the atv also and they worked good as a combo .

If you want more of them, let me know, I think I even have some I have not used. The HD-2s ran just as strong for me, and IMO were much easier to clean (no overnight drying). I don't use a pre filter, and the chips just seemed to stick to the K&Ns (but I always liked them in cars). With the HD-2s, I frequently just tap them out, and blow them with the compressor every now & then. Have not had troubles so far, but will likely replace them now & then, especially on the saw that does most of the milling.

I tried K&N even before HD-2s, so I did post this on the other site some time ago. Others on the site recommended HD-2s instead of the K&N, and I agreed with their assessment.

I may also give the AM filters a try, can get five of them for less than an HD-2.

I thank you for sharing your info with your milling saw. I cleaned & blew out the HD-2 this guy had on his 660, but his other 660 (with a new filter) runs much stronger, so I plan to replace the filter on the first saw to see if that is the problem. I always appreciate it when I learn things on the site.

There used to be a backing plate they sold for those filters.

I think they fit my 044/440s, but not my 046/460s. But, I don't think you are gonna like how fast stuff sticks to them.

The HD-2s don't have a back plate either, not a problem.

Looks like the 440 cover has a lip the k&n fits snug into so a plate is not needed ,i did try the 660 ,no lip like the 440 has on that cover ,and the way the filter flange is made on that saw the k&n will not fit ,it is too thick on the inside of the filter, wont fit over the spitback cover or that area behind it ,so they will not work on 460 or 461 either ,interchange says will fit 441 ,i have not checked on that saw yet ,seems like a plate may be needed on that saw though because the wingnut is under the plastic cover .The way this 440 cover looks with the inner flange ,i could cut the plate out of an old 440 cover and make one for the 441 fairly easy K&n stihl 440 filter 001.jpg K&n stihl 440 filter 002.jpg K&n stihl 440 filter 004.jpg K&n stihl 440 filter 005.jpg
