The cover is 5/16” where the studs go through. I actually bought three of the nuts and only used one (I had a busted cover I tested with first). The other two haven’t been messed with. And yes there is no more room in my pile of bad decisions. So yeah you can have em
How much too long are the ones you have?

You’ll have to swap the studs out

Old thread but wanted to add something to it. I just added captive bar nuts to my ms400 wrap handle kit clutch cover. Even the 261 nuts have too long of a sleeve so I added a copper washer behind the nut before I crimped them in. Wish I still had access to a mill or lathe, would have just cut a new crimp slot lower on the nuts. There is not a lot of meat in the holes of the cover so you will have to be very careful when you drill the holes out. Should work the same on a 461 cover like the op asked about.

I'd like to add captive bar nuts to a 461 and that video sure seemed slick, but I have absolutely no idea of how to go about doing something like. Is anyone able to explain it for an idiot like me?

You have to drill out the existing holes just barely bigger than the captive nut sleeve, cant remember off the top of my head the drill bit I used. Then there is a small lip left inside. I used a 1/2" chamfered reamer from the backside to take out most of the lip to allow the nut to move when its loosened. In my case with the 362/400 cover its thinner than the nut needs it to be so I added a copper washer between the head of the nut and the cover to space the sleeve down in the hole before I crimped them permanently. I actually just used a spare bar stud in a vice to crimp the nuts, and didnt but the tool stihl sells. If you aren't very comfortable/ capable with drilling accurately and straight I would not attempt this. Not sure what a 461 cover costs but the large 362/ 400 is about $100 if you mess up its trash.

Thanks Joe. I'm definitely out of my element trying to do something like that...

All of my saws that I use regularly have captive nuts. Im kind of particular about things and really wanted everything to match with the newer style cover but there is no factory large (west coast) cover for the 362/ 400s.

Just a tidbit for anyone curious the 462/500 cover will fit and work but the rear angle is off a bit and looks funny to me as it doesn't match the handle angle.

I dont have either saw but maybe somebody can confirm if a 661 cover would be usable on a 461. Could be a solution for you.
