My dislike of a 390 isn't from how they run its how flimsy and heavy they are.

I'm sure that they can run great most every saw can.

It depends on who ports it and what it's built for.
Back to my original statement, stock for stock a 661 will clobber a 390.

John Reilly builds some extremely fast 390's

Im not getting it. For years the 390xp was the kid on the block and all of the sudden they r so so? Im not seeing in any of these videos that 390s r getting clobbered but I know there is no doubt faster saws. That 395 looks like it may be hard to beat

390 makes a fast cant saw I'm talking about a woods ported saw.
When I run yours I'll have a new way of thinking I hope.

Like I said,I don't like the saw not how the saw runs,I'm can build a strong 390 also
But the 066 I build now are so much stronger than they were a year ago they can't be compared.

I think Mike Lee has noticed the same thing I have

I didnt think the 390 was that strong until I hung 404 on it and pulled the lowend out of it. Its kinda strange how it worked out but worked out very well for me in what I was lookin for to noodle. Maybe a 3/8 chain with lowered rakers would hit that sweet spot this 390 of mine likes but I cant see a reason to switch back to 3/8 as well as it noodles with 404

If u could get the 390s to run well u would have a flooded shop with 390s, 661s, 064s, 066s!! The more the merrier for business would be my motto. My guess is the 390 will run right with the 064s, 066s, 661s. The one Id be worried about would be the 395 but then again it depends on how u cut and your cutting style. I like a saw that has rpm in cut and has good lean on too, if it dawgs out real easy its not a saw to my liking

As much as you've been pissing with those 066-660-661's I would hope you've made them faster! My 71 you did for me runs good and has no where near the grinding done to it that you're doing to the Stihl's. if you were to spend as much time trying to figure out a 390 or 395 as you have on those 66's your perspective might be a little different! How long has it taken for you to figure out how to beat your 395? Did you ever go back into your 395 to make it faster?

I agree. If he sets his mind to it hes more than capable in making the 390 as fast or faster than the others but he has made it apparent that the AV and weight is a roadblock for personal his personal taste but theres a big market there for folks that like 390s

I for one agree the 390 is too heavy and awkard compared to my 064. For bucking and moving around the 390 gets cut off and the 064 cranks

Everyone but Shaun says there 390 beats there 395,my 395 is pretty stout and my 066's will beat it but I know I don't build as strong of a 395 as Shaun does, after all that's his specialty kinda like a 064/066 is mine. I looked and I've ported 7 390's and owned 3 so I know about them.
Speaking for myself not any other builder
My 066's beat my 390's that doesn't mean I think it will beat anybody else's.
I port a lot of saws and have for a long time and I build strong saws but 90% of the saws I port are 1122 so obviously there going to be my strongest.
If I ported 390's everyday for years like I have 1122 they would be pretty stout I'm thinking.

Yes I redone my 395 and I port several 94 and 95's,got a couple here now to port

Again I'm not saying my 066's will beat Shaun's 395's. I'm saying they beat mine.
Hell Shaun ported my 066 and he said his 395 are ahead of it,I can build one stronger than my 066 but he can to.
