Your dealer thinks older stihls are junk. Clearly he has no experience with a 10mm 044... He should come to a GTG and get some schoolin.

Well, he's run a 441 and a 362, so....they're the baddest, smoothest, and bestest of them all. Ever. Forever. Just ask him lol

Around here the .058 is mostly found on 3/8 equipped husky's but just as many seem to be .050.
Stihl is the usual .050 for 3/8 and .063 for .325, seems ass backward.

IIRC some chain brands like oregon use the same chassis/thickness for .058 and .050 and just grind the part of the drivers that ride in the groove down for the .050. So the chain chassis strength would be the same on either.

Not sure I'm on board with the wider drivers carrying more oil thing. If the saw pumped enough oil to fill the bar groove between drivers on any gauge, seems like the tank would be empty pretty quick...

What's the deal with that red lever 044, Eric? Is it coming back to the May GTG? Are you buying it? If not, can I??

Hey Fred -- the owner of the red lever 044 has some work to do at his place in NH once snow is gone, after he's done w/ that he is going to consider selling me the saw.

I can borrow the saw anytime for GTG use -- he's all on board as I did a few things to the saw he's happy with also I return it w/ sharp chains he doesn't seem to be able to sharpen on his own!

I'll try and bring her with me in May!

Would be an experiment to change same drive link chain and bar and see if more oil is used.

I agree, if the oiler could fill the spaces between the tangs, tank would be dry!!

I have found out one interesting thing. A used 050 gauge bar will usually accept 057 chain, especially if the 057 chain has been around the block a few times. Sometimes all you have to do is clean the used 050 gauge bar with a scraper and then run some 150-grit belt sandpaper through the groove, folded in half.

However, I've never been able to get a used 058 gauge bar to accept any 063 chain. Not sure why, but that's been my experience.

Here it seems like Stihl is .050 on 3/8" and .063 on .325. Husky comes 058. Most guys switch them over after the first bar to 050 just due to convenience. I heard of one dealer that buys a boatload of 063 setups in 3/8 for all his saws just to make the customer HAVE to come back to him for a chain as hardly anyone carries .063 around here in 3/8. I think I have one .063 bar in a 22" and that was just because that's all you can get it in and I was curious on it.

Regional differences are amazing. Around here, 063 Stihl bars and chain are more common than 050. Logging might have something to do with it. Many loggers taking down big cottonwoods prefer 063 chain for long bars, so the dealers stock it.

On the other hand, 063 bars for Husky saws are rare.

The largest dealer around here, puts .050 on Stihl & .058 on Husq saws.
He also has a huge stock of loops in both gauges, but very little .063.

Here unless a Stihl saw is a low power unit running Picco/lo pro chain Stihl Aust insists all new units are sold with 063 from a MS261-880. Years ago I bought a bunch of 050 bars & chain out of the States to in 28"-36" setups. Big mistake! Chips get stuck in rails, drive tangs get worn 5x as fast and bars get very hot. High power saws & very hard wood are a bad mix for 050. I like 050 & would run it in different conditions. I now only use 050 on top handles and polesaws. .325, 3/8 & .404 are all .063 unless its Husky and gets .058.

I must admit that the only bar and chain combo that has ever totally jammed up on me was a 30" bar, 050 gauge, 3/8" pitch chain being pulled by my Stihl 046 Mag. Buck cutting some big tough ash, stuck chips in the groove stopped it dead and jammed up the nose. I replaced the bar and chain with 063 gauge and completed the job.

I've never seen .058 on a Stihl of any size. (except my test bar that was modified to fit my stihls)
.058 is more popular in the NE USA and very uncommon around here in the SE USA.
I stock it for the occasional person that needs some. I have Stihl bars that use .043, .050 and .063. I use bars that are 3/8 x .050 and 3/8 x .063. The assortments of chains are dizzying. It's no wonder people get the wrong set up from time to time.

If you have problems with chips clogging the bar and tip, pull out of the cut and pizz rev !!!!

Makes it more fun, clears and oils bar, and cools engine down.

I have more problems if the tip is buried!!
