Quick question on bar gauge:. Why does 0.050 seem more popular than 0.058? What is the advantage to the thinner drive links?

I've always been an 0.058 guy because it seemed common around here and thinking the heavier drive links would take abuse better. Thoughts?

Seems more like a regional distribution preference than anything else.

Stihl around here doesn't even carry .058

It seems 0.063 is popular with Stihl. I'm more of a husky guy and usually see 0.050 or 0.058 but it seems lately 0.050 is more popular.

All of my saws are .050 simply because everyone in my area stocks loops in that gauge. Only the stihl dealers stock .063 and for some reason they are all not very friendly.

The wider bar gauge can hold more oil for longer bars as I'm told

I switched to a GB bar that's .058 from .050. I know baileys has it in stock, I need to see what the link count difference is first before I order. I also has rim drive so I don't have to change a warn sprocket drive

The cutters are the same width, the tangs are wider on 0.058 and thinner on 0.50.
I see Stihl tends to go towards 0.050 on the shorter bars and 0.063 on the longer bars. Husky tends toward 0.050 on the shorter bars and 0.058 on the longer bars.
Bigger saws with more torque putting longer bars into wood benefit from having thicker chain. It could be that it has to do with carrying more oil in a wider bar gap and therefore necessitating a wider drive tang. Maybe it has to do with better stability of the chain in the cut, or more mass allows for better thermal absorption from friction when the chain is loaded while in the cut?
But shops don't like to hold infinite inventory, so it does become a regional thing what size chain is commonly carried locally.

Forgot to mention its a differnt mount also, d176 to d009, i think it will still be the same link count tho.

My stihl dealer has 3/8 in 50 gauge and .325 in 63 gauge.

He keeps a few 58 gauge loops for the husky guys that come in but not in alot of length options..just 16-20" bars.

My local dealer carries .050 in 3/8 and .063 in .325 as well. But he doesn't carry anything else for any other brands because he thinks older stihls and all other brands are junk. So I get my chains and parts from guys on here

Your dealer thinks older stihls are junk. Clearly he has no experience with a 10mm 044... He should come to a GTG and get some schoolin.

I like the idea of the wider drive link groove can move more oil for longer bars. I order all of my bars from online so I can stay with 0.058 for now without problems. Wanted a sugi bar for some bling from HL but all are 0.050. Wanted to stick with one gauge so all chains are interchangeable and no worries about wrong mix and match... I don't have any long bars (28" longest) so it's moot for me. Prob would have gone 0.050 a while ago but have several bars and chains now.

.058 Is not around here either. I don't really have any dealer support. I order my stuff online. I'll give the local shops a chance again but they couldn't even make me a chain loop....

When I first started getting into this, I looked at the few bars that I had. My 3/8 bars were all .050, so that's what I've gone to exclusively since then just to make things simple. Other than a 36" GB bar that I bought for my 066. That is .063

Why go either/or , .050" vs .063", when one can go "instead" - .058"!

The way I see it it's all just marketing, no more , no less.
Just manufacturers stirring the pot!

In my area Stihl comes with .063", Dolmar and Makita with .058", and Husqvarna with .050" gauge chains.
In Germany Dolmar comes with .058", but Makita with .050" gauge chain.

My small 40cc's have 3/8" LowProfile in .050" and I used to get them to snap.
My 64 & 79cc have 3/8" in .058" and I have no oiling issues with my 36" setup and I only got a TriLink loop to ever snap on me.
