Ultra at 40-1 makes stuff dirty from what I've seen, piston tops, exhaust openings are really crappy. This is on stock saws at work and some of mine before I changed back to mobil when the 661 karked it

So we're seeing dirty piston tops from oil and I'm getting the impression that it's ok, but, doesn't excess carbon turn hard and score p/c, cause a failure and generally do naughtiness to internals?

I'm confused

my photo shows what running the wrong oil can do for you
like using a tcw3 oil in air cooled engine or vise versa.

Yes. Unless the saw is so rich its washing the top you'll get some carbon. Fuel quality plays a big role as well.

The short stroke in a saw engine seems to do fine on lower octane fuel, but I've not been able to really test middle octane fuels like 93. I have tested 101, and it slowed my saws down.

Are you bringing the timing up to utilize the higher fuel grade?
