I would say that a ported saw that has a ā€œfasterā€ chain speed will dull one quicker. All chains dull, even in a normal cutting situation, once a tooth looses its edge, running the chain speed faster only exacerbates the heat to the dull edge of the cutter.

A Solid-Carbide drill bit that is dull to a ball point will still make a hole ...

A machine tap missing one of three flutes can cut a thread ...

... doesn't make it right though. ;)

Well when the chain is hot enough to burn off the paint from the bar the steel in the chain is softer = more ware and eventual stretch. Granted thatā€™s not a wanted or normal thing to be happening but it does to everyone sometimes. Basically everything that happens during a chain cutting wood creates ware. Certain things cause ware at a higher rate like dirt, dull teeth, extra hard wood, having your rakers too high or low. All of those things cause friction which = heat. Heat also thins your bar oil causing it to do less of the job it should, witch in turn caused again more heat. In the end heat is always the biggest enemy of a saw chain and a 2stroke motor.

Iā€™ve gotten bars and chains hot enough to vaporize the bar oil while testing bars in bone dry hard eucalyptus in the desert. Less than 300Ā°. Steel doesnā€™t even begin to soften until 500, and not significantly until 1,000. If itā€™s not hot enough to show color, itā€™s not hot enough to be soft.

Ported saws burn more gas use more bar oil and wear out chains much faster than stock saws but if your a professional the productivity increase with ported saws more than pay for the added cost, if your not a professional and your on a budget stay away from ported saws.

The amount of heat generated cutting is not enough to affect steel. I think itā€™s more about speed, energy, impact to the cutting edgeā€¦.in hard or dirty wood.
I generally find the bigger saws hammer chain harder but it's down to what you do with it.

99% of people, if they gain more power, want to use it. You either lower the depth gauges or lean on it a bit more and both of those work everything harder and wear everything faster. It's a trade off but you do more work with it in a shorter time so it all balances out in the end.

I don't have anything big that's ported so limited experience with this. The 288 clone kind of is but it's nothing serious

Cut wood with a dull skill saw bladeā€¦ Plane wood with dull planer knivesā€¦ Do they stay the same dullness, or do they continue to get duller? Chainsaw chain is no different, not arguing the heat aspect, but no matter what they continue to get duller with each pass the teeth make.

I dont see how a ported saw is harder on a chain..
Yes it may spin faster and you may not percieve how dull something is right away but youll definately feel it..
Dull is dull period end of story. Can get there just as fast oem vs ported

Itā€™s kinda the same ā€œprincipalā€ of a high hp vehicle vs a stock one, both with bone stock everything but the motor, Which one will strip a gear first or blow out the clutch faster? Itā€™s why manufactures put bigger brakes on, or a stronger transmissions. More power if used will always ware a mechanical system faster then one with less.

500Ā°? 1,000? The wood would be burning. Heat is generated but itā€™s not enough to soften the steel.

Try it with your pocket knife or a filet knife. They never get above room temp, yet will get duller with each straight down drag though wood. Now imagine that at the speed of a chainā€¦

Definitely some interesting perspectives being discussed here.
