I'm not much on the V8 diesel for low end torque in the hills where I'm at.
I had a 7.3. It took a hot tune to keep up with a first gen Cummins towing in the hills here. Empty the 7.3 could get it top end.The 7.3 torque curve is actually pretty close to a 466 on paper/Dyno specs so it's not too bad. I'm just old school and like injection pumps with screws I can adjust and I also prefer I-6 engines also, simply for ease of working on.

Yep. I had 2 of them. Injectors and a tuned pump would kill the 7.3 towing. That's my favorite engine before the 3rd gens. What is a first gen Cummins? Hope your not referring to a old square body ones with the rotary pumps because those were toads! Even the firsts ones with the 7100 pumps weren't nothing to brag about unless you had different injectors and ground fuel plate in them. A couple buddy's had them, they were all right, probably better than just a tuned 7.3

Yeah top end was great on the 7.3. I just coukdnt see spending $6k to get to where the Cummins was for $2500. Just towing where you shift constantly was annoying. The 93 Cummins I could run in 4th gear most of the time loaded around here and drop to 3rd a few times where I was going through 3-5 on the powerstroke to stay the same speed. I do like the Zf 6 speed better than any dodge transmission except the NV 5600. You're probably on flatter ground too and not many 9-15% grades.A 7.3 with the right stuff done to them will run right with them pulling and spank them on top end. It's toque/power band is just at a higher RPM than a 5.9. So many people just assume that it don't pull as good. Yea at 1500/1600 rpm it won't but it's power is at 2000 rpm. This argument can go on forever, you prefer the Cummins I like the 7.3, both good engines. I'll just leave it at that. I will say both are way better with 6 speed manuals than the 4 speed automatics that they came with! I think we could agree on that at least.... lol

I hauled hay with some guys that talked about how strong their 7.3 was. I passed them going about 80 on a 5% grade 2 miles long. They never mentioned it again. That was in an 01 cummins.Yea I've been up some 9% grades, nothing more than that. A lot 5-7% grades is all. No mountains like you. There was 3 of us that left a pull one night, I had my truck, one guy had a tuned 2010 Cummins and the other guy had tuned 06 Duramax I started last and passed them both going up a hill coming out of Marquette. I thought it was kind of funny, didn't think I would get a round either one with my slow ol 7.3...lol

There's a lot of adjustments in the pumps. Most can't tune one even at a lot of shops. 400 hp in the 96-98 manual with $0 invested can be done quite easily.Oh yea, that's good. Yours must of ran really good. I've been around a lot of those 7100 pumped Cummins and none ran like that. Guess they didn't have the right stuff done to them. I remember you saying yours wasn't peaky like they are stock didn't you? That grade we went up was only 6%, no mountains like your in
