Anyone know about big diesel engines?

Looking around at cheap vintage diesel in the area... wondering which big engines are good and which are lemons.

Currently looking at a good running Renault M510 unit.

Do yourself a favor, buy a Cummins. 290 small cam, 350 big cam, or a Formula 400, all great engines and parts are (expensive but) readily available.

Depends on what you want to do with it really, if you NEED the RPMs then the old two stroke Detroits are great but they are old and parts are starting to dry up.

My vote would be a mechanical IH-DT466. Reliable, easy to work on, parts are available and not crazy expensive. There's also tons of them out there to be had.

If you need a work engine to rely on, buy something bigger than you need (it won't work as hard) find something with a dealer close (Deere, Cummins, cat, Detroit) and get an engine with sleeves!.
