Did someone say you should dress that bar?
I've been looking at getting one of the hand file bar dressers and a bar rail closer but having problems locating a rail closer at the moment.

Question for discussion is has anyone seen or messed with the upgraded Pro versions of any of these saws? Farmertec has the "pro" saws in white with the carbon fiber tops, and Neotec has the Farmac "high end" saws in gray and black. The farmertec saws tout a Walbro carb and "italy" top end. Meteor? Not sure what differentiates the neotec saws. A Walbro carb for a 372 is indeed a hundred bucks. But the basic cheapo carbs on these things seem to work pretty good, so I don't see the need/value there. Dave posts a $10 carb fix every couple days that works fine. 🙂

And running these saws up market like that seems like rowing in the opposite direction from the initial concept. Especially if the rest of the saw is unchanged. If they are just bolting a better carb and/or top end on the same saw is it worth another couple hundred dollars?

I've never ran the upgraded versions all of mine are several years old.
Of the china carbs I had 3 china 288 carbs that wouldn't work at all
most of them I have do work but have a very narrow tuning range
There's 7 chusky 372s floating around my family with china carbs that haven't had any problems.

I put 6 more tanks through the 272 with the raisman piston kit and china carb this morning
That makes 8 tanks totalIMG_20230512_094054.jpgIMG_20230512_094150.jpg
My neighbor never picked up his power head after I rebuilt it
So I've been running it with my bar and hipa chain.

Guess two things come to mind after reading some of this , my Holzfforma g395 did a lot of work last year, 2022. This year I've leaned on a clone 372 until it died ( turns out yet again another case/seal around bearing fail ) But that 395 was solid once I had it sorted out. Some highlights of what it produced :)

And the next Chinese object I just purchased is one of those "Vevor" $100 dollar chain sharpener/grinder. It's "ok" and is functional just not solid as I would like. BUT I've been using chains ground on it now for a couple of weeks with good result's..... in PINE! Everything looks goo in that soft wood. I have over 100 chains from the last few years that I will go thru and sort out. Did a short video on THAT things as well.

Neighbor gave me a damn Tecumseh push mower
He bought it new ran it once and it didn't run long without flooding so he put it in a barn
I tried adjusting the carb it was junk so I got a 10.00 Amazon carb for it IMG_20230602_084534.jpg
The amazon carb is far better made then the factory
I mowed my yard with it.IMG_20230602_083528.jpg
Put new fuel lines and bulb on this Chinese auger
The kill switch was bad so the owner put a piece of wire around the plug wire to pull it to
shut it off
And also shock the piss out of whoever ran it.

Turning a fried 290 into a 390 with a ft kitIMG_20230602_092748.jpg
Actually the kit looks very good
I did one of these 9 year's ago for a guy he still runs it no problems
Ft seems to do a better job with open port cylinders.

About a year ago a friend gave me an 029 that had been straight- gassed.
I ended up putting a complete MS390 engine from FT in it because the crankshaft was so bad.
Then I found this site.
Did a muffler mod, opened up the jet in the carb a little.
20" bar with Stihl 33RS chain.
Runs great, cuts great, been using it to cut firewood. Kind of heavy.
So I just finished building an MS361 from a kit. BB, MM, gasket delete, Walbro carb and a few other OEM upgrades to improve reliabilty.
It's lighter, so I like it even better than the 029/390 so far.
Time will tell just how durable these are.
I was recently given a toasted MS290. Maybe a MS390 cylinder with a popup piston for this one?
This can get addicting!

I rebuilt a 029 for a friend with a Chinese 039 cylinder. It wouldn't develop 100psi compression. Squish measure 0.055".

What is the best AM 039 cylinder to use? I need to get one and I don't want to do this again.

What brand of cylinder did you use? You pretty much get what you pay for.
The Chinese do not seem to apply any quality control to these parts. The end user gets to do that.
The No-name parts in white or brown boxes seem to be of lesser quality than the ones in commercial packaging and a brand name like Farmertec, Neotec, etc.
Having said that, there still is no guarantee of getting a good part, just a better chance that you won't get a bad one.
Buying from one of the US based vendors, like the ones on this site is the best bet. They will stand behind what they sell.

I didn't buy the parts, my friend did. It was in one of the white non-descript boxes you described.

What's a good brand to go with? Is Hyway any good? When I build saws I usually go with used OEM but 039 cyclinders are very hard to find.

I've used Farmertech cylinders for 039, and a Cross pop up piston to make a very snappy saw.

Got my Hipa Carburetor and spark plugs today. The carburetor works flawlessly, which is nice.
Out of the 4 spark plugs 2 were perfect, one had an off center electrode strap ( which I bent back into center).
The 4th one strangely enough had some mashed threads and the porcelain looks miscast?

Hyway parts are considered to be good quality, and they are sold by one of our site's sponsors.
I have had good luck with them.

Maintenance Chief:
Did you do any other mods to your 039/ popup build?
Probably a muffler mod.
Anything else?
