I would love to see a dyno of a saw w/o a front muffler cover, and I will even make a prediction:

Don't know if it will gain or loose power, but the power band will be much thinner than one with a front cover.

I'd like to see some other folks put there predictions out there BEFORE THE TEST!

I won’t get into the whole muffler thing because there are many variables. However this brings up a good point. Attention should be paid to where some of these saws make power and how flat the torque curve is. A peaky powerband is not ideal from a worksaw standpoint in the woods regardless of how fast the saw is or how much power it makes on a dyno. You need a good balance of both speed and torque. Race saw in 8x8? Totally different ball game.

For the record, I've only noticed the "torque loss" on relatively stock cylinders, not fully ported ones, and it was usually more related to the baffle than total muffler openings. This was also documented in TM's 461 video.

The saw was slower w/o the baffle, and had the exact (almost) same times with both dual port and tri port mufflers. However, it did benefit a lot when going from a single port to a dual port muffler. The old "diminishing returns" comes into play here.

The other thing that would be neat to check (if you have the time and desire) is fuel consumption. My prediction is that excessive muffler openings will result in excessive fuel consumption on some saws.

Right or wrong, at least I have the balls to state my predictions.

Joe better give up his day job, we all got plenty of test requests to keep him busy for months. We should have some food delivered to keep him on the dyno. Great to see the numbers of a simple BGD, sure not every saw will offer the same result but for the conservative modder it can be a good simple safe mod that can be reversed. 10% is 10%...like $20-bux is $20-bux.

I am super curious if there’s any 10 horse worksaws is out there! I’m also super curious what some of the better 395’s are putting out
Read my mind bro. I gotta put some serious fuel thru my mmws 395 before I send her for some muscle flexing.
