I finished my 288xp lite build almost a year ago and absolutely love it! I did a little work smoothing the ports and polished exhaust but didnt modify much. Opened existing muffler port and also forgot to install the base gasket. I plugged my decomp, but it definitely takes some muscle to pull over. If i get much older, ill likely reinstall. I think youd be quite pleased with some mild port work, but the 288 is a horse regardless. One of those saws that'll put a smile or occasionally a bit of fear on any face. Nice build/thread. Just curious, did you alter the compartment separator for the intake? My first assembly attempt resulted in intake leak because removing the base gasket dropped the jug just enough to throw things off. trimmed the separator and all was good.
Yeah I'm glad I put the decomp in, it would be trying to rip my fingers were it not there lol. I didn't have an issue with the separator at all. I may double check it now that you've shared that potential pit fall though. I'd be surprised if there's a problem, the saw is holding its tune extremely well and my idle is consistent as all hell. The more I run this saw the more impatient I am becoming to wait on porting it. I know there's power just waiting for me to release it. But with that said, it's still a fun Saw to run stock. Smiling all the way:)

I have a like new 281xp without a decomp, I had to put a D handle on it. With my advanced age & at least 3 broken collerbones I couldn't start it, now I can get two thumps per pull, good thing it starts easy.
When I first got the saw from Dustin it had a healthy 150psi and it tried to take my fingers a couple times. Just wasn't prepared for the starting attitude...lol

Mine ran and tuned pretty well at first also, but just didnt cut like i expected so i ran a pressure check and found a very small leak. Ive heard others with same issue.. not saying your not in the clear, but it'd be a crying shame to burn up a fresh build.. Always a good idea to pressure check a new build.

I am planning to throw a D handle on but
its clearly not a priority as i have a few other saws on the table.

I will definitely be checking mine out. Thanks man

Building carpenter bee traps at the moment, them things are destroying my pole barn. But luckily it's mainly on non-structural soffit boards

Got my Husqvarna Orange paint today. NOW I'm happy with the color ha ha ha! The match between the cover and the clutch cover is now perfect. I'll be tearing it down to paint everything. Call me nuts but that's how I am. I should have the painting done by the time my decal kit arrives. Just need some good weather...easier said than done. I'm sure once the painting is done I'll be searching all corners of the net looking for a near new tank. That'll be a tricky one.

I'm sure you mentioned it earlier in the thread, but where did you find the paint and what brand is it?

I ordered actual Husqvarna Orange through my local dealer. Way back in this thread someone mentioned it was available and from that point on I intended to get the right stuff and repaint everything. It was like $14 per can.

Hopefully it's better than Stihl paint.

what is the colour code for this match?
Not sure which numbers you need off the can but the pic I posted has everything in it. The label next to it has some info on it too such as the husky part number.

Edit: Oops! Wrong info. Here is the stuff I used in that earlier pic you were referencing.

Ooo, I like it classic 'Allis Chalmers tractor paint'

Probably quite tough too..
That's what I was thinking too;). Anytime I've used implement paint it's always taken abuse quite well. Although I don't wanna abuse my saw now:confused:. Can't win. Lol!

I will look at the can when I get home to get you the color code

How does the 288xp hold up against the 066 or other saws in it's class etc? I am watching on fleabay a 181se.. It looks a good buy.
Since this is my first 288 I really can't speak to how it stacks up against the other big dogs. I have run an 066 a long time ago and I think a stock 288 is below that power class for sure. To compete with that you'd have to be slinging a 394.
