Great build Xpslinger. None of my rebuilds look like that. I noticed you have the single spring clutch, true to that era. Those suck to put a spring on.
Thanks man, I appreciate that. I considered replacing the clutch with the newer version but if it works properly I'll run it. I've never had one apart and just by looking at it I don't think I want to...lol.

All back together and running good. I'll be making first cuts with it on Sunday. I'll probably get a video and post it up. Only thing left is the decals which should be here in a couple weeks. I'll also be getting a 28" TSB or Sugi for it in the near future. Gotta let the bank account cool off a bit. Very very happy with how it turned out. Thanks for the help Joe @RIDE-RED 350r

It looks like theres some life left on that clutch. You gotta watch the "shoes". They wear more on the inside than outside so they look like they have more wear than they really do.
I bought a 288 with that style clutch and it looked good. I pulled the clutch to replace the sprocket. When I pulled the clutch it was was worn out. I replaced the clutch. I didnt think to look for new "shoes". They may be NLA.

325-350° works better for cases. No need to freeze anything.
Thanks for the tip Mike. I had frozen the crank because I planned in installing the bearings in the case first and I wanted the crank to seat with minimal effort. Just don't like pushing hard on cranks, my over paranoid brain. But I won't be freezing anything next time.

Looks great! Makes me wanna build a third one. Glad I could help out.
1st class all the way brother, cannot thank you enough. I'll build my other set of cases eventually and use it as a "beater" to learn how to port a 288. Gonna be a while though.

At that temperature bearings fall in and if the bearings are on the crank or metal cage you can warm them up with the case half. No pulling at all. Just push together by hand

Forgot to mention that I ended up using the 281 cases for this rebuild. Call me crazy after all the work I put into the original set but the 281 cases were in a little bit better shape in 2 small ways. 1st there is no corrosion on them anywhere. 2nd is they have even less chain rash on the clutch side than my originals, and that's saying something because my originals didn't have a lot either. Not saying that my original set is unserviceable by any stretch of the imagination but why not use the better of the 2 sets even if it was by a small margin. Pics of the 281 cases below were taken after I cleaned them up, didn't even paint them at this point. Now my only problem is that the OCD in me says I have to swap the serial number tags...lol!

The only pushing I had to do was getting the bearings fully seated on the crank but they took minimal pressure because I heated the inner race first. I used propane to heat the cases, kept the flame moving all over and the bearings fully seated by hand as you described. Do you use an oven to heat the cases or do you have a pyrometer to verify you're up to your desired temp?

Let me know when you need parts, I will hook you up again.
I definitely will brother. Probably gonna be a while before my next rebuild because I'm gonna be having too much fun running my 288:). I think my next project will be a 346 or 359 for my oldest. He's got the fever after running my 357
