Since this is my first 288 I really can't speak to how it stacks up against the other big dogs. I have run an 066 a long time ago and I think a stock 288 is below that power class for sure. To compete with that you'd have to be slinging a 394.
Anything would compete with this 066, it's in bits!! I don't like it really anyway.

I am a Husqvarna fan through and through, although I do love my 038 Mag. My first saw was a blown husky 371. I loved that saw.

Regards your 288xp I think any of the 1 and 2 series husky's look damn mean. This 288 looks a beauty.
I think they feel better in the hands than the equivalent Stihl's

I would happily sack in the 066 when I have finished building it for a 288!

Well there's your answer brother. I am a rookie to the 288 as this is my first one. I will say that in stock form it is fun to run, it has a very wide powerband. I'm resisting the urge to tear it back apart and do some porting, I wanna get used to how it feels stock and I already love it. Brad Snelling has a video of one he ported on the last page of the saw video thread and it looks and sounds very mean:). Much like most of Brads saws

I've never had the urge to port my 288s they are strong saws stock.
I usually just muff mod and clean up the exhaust the one my brother gave me a 2000 model he bought new and is still the strongest stock 288 I've run.
i will have to try a ported one and see the difference.

I have a like new 281xp without a decomp, I had to put a D handle on it. With my advanced age & at least 3 broken collerbones I couldn't start it, now I can get two thumps per pull, good thing it starts easy.
I've got one of those it's a *b-word to start lol
Great runner though.

Edit: Just looked it up and you are correct my friend. Sorry for the mis-information, right when I think I know something about a Stihl...lol!
Ha ha, no harm no foul. I never understand Stihl's numbering, even the higher numbers dont always mean higher displacement or power. At least Husqvarna's higher model numbers mean higher cc' and power

I like the simplicity of husky numbering as well vs cubic inch numbers on a Stihl

But then you get the super and magnum versions of those Cubic inches and the whole systems goes tits up..

More to the point what are your plans with the 288xp?

This side of the pond it is hard to find a good saw builder. I would love to send my mag cylinder to a builder. I am really considering fixing the 066 selling it and putting a search out for a 181, 281 or 288 to play with.
