Low top covers are still available from dealers!

Thanks for that Dan, I checked today and yes, new top covers are available, and only $59NZD which I thought was really reasonable. I've got one underway and will post some pics once it's all finished.

clutch cover touchin it?
got stihl 036 pro safety on 268. needed trim on back of cc.
same can be done on 288 w/no ill effects, other than looks.
IIRC the 288 full wrap has a piece of rubber hose behind the clutch cover. That looks great BTW.

Yeah the cover was touching in those photos. Little more love with the dead blow and voila.

All finished! I must admit, after being a Stihl man all my life (my father used to own a dealership in the late 1970's) that this saw has changed my opinion a bit. It feels alive...and has serious grunt! this is a 300th anniversary edition from '89 which I've completely rebuilt.
