@Onan18 yeah Joe, I was surprised the Echo didn't get more votes. Good value saw there, but it doesn't cost anything to vote. And this is hardly the place where rational financial decisions are made on chainsaws.

Is the 501 a mag case or plastic case saw? And is the Shindaiwa 492 the equivalent saw in red? You know me when there's a choice between red and orange. ;)

The 501 is a mag case.

I bought a 492 shindaiwa a few months back..... as near as I can figure, it's the same as the 501/4910 Echo. It appears to use the same piston/cylinder, carb, and coil, as the 501......

It's very light weight, which I like......but the av is pretty poor compared to my ms261 or 346 saws, and the power in stock form is way behind the Stihl or husky 50cc saws.

I'm selling my 492 because, I've got a 261 and a couple 346xp's and they work better.

I want to know what you chose and why
51 husky, best 20 inch bar size saw, 50cc saw I ever ran. My opinion why buy a 60cc saw if I have two in the 70ccs range with more power, and not much more expensive. But 50cc can be more affordable and handy at times.

The 501P is a Mag case full professional saw. The 4910 is the detuned "Mid Range" version similar to what Husqvarna did with the 545 vs. 550 XP. The 492 Shindaiwa is the Red 4910, unfortunately there is no Red version of the 501P. :(

Which begs the question; why buy another company known for tools for professionals and turn that dynamic on its head?
Almost as brilliant as Makita acquiring Dolmar only to change it from making gasoline saws to electric saws, made somewhere else without the name.

Shindaiwa has always been a Landscaper company, they never were really marketed to Arborists or Loggers. The String Trimmers, Edgers, Blowers, and Hedge Trimmers are all full commercial units.

True, though they did produce pro type mag cased units for that market.

Agreed. They were well known for their quality in that area.

4910 has the same power as 501P I believe, but with a plastic top handle. It’s the 490 that’s detuned.

As far as I can tell it's maybe a different coil or at least different timing. The 4910 liked a bit of timing advance, the 501P didn't as it popped in the cut and got really angry. The cylinders measured out the same and I had ported them identically.

I had a 4910 that I couldn’t advance timing on. Guessing there are slight variations in the timing

I tried advancing the timing on a 4910 just a few degrees based on feedback from others…I had to undo the advance before I sent it off.

The 4910 I did was a year ago and I think it was a couple years old (still new in box). Maybe they are now coming less detuned?

Got it and thank you! Had no idea they were doing a XP/non-Xp type of thing like Husky does. Is the price spread similar?

Hope they keep both brands going. We certainly don't need to lose anymore of them!

The CS-4910 is $379.95 with an 18" bar and the CS-501P is $499.95 with an 18" bar so $120.00 between the two. They do the same thing with the CS-590 "Timberwolf" at 399.99 vs. the CS-620P at $599.99 both with 20" bars. No "Mid Range" version of the CS-7310 that I have heard of, yet...

And I certainly hope Shindaiwa doesn't go the way of the Dodo, we feature it pretty heavily and they are very popular with landscapers in this area.
