I’ve been thinking about trying out .404 on my 461’s as I can get it for the same price as 3/8’s loop for loop and hopefully get more life/ durability in between sharpening.
I cut skidded ash, sugar maple, black cherry, etc
Has anyone else done this? Do you like it?
Or would it be more 660/661/390 territory?
Would the bigger teeth be harder on the chassis of a 461?
Thanks

404 on a 70cc chassis is do-able, but ……..

It is more suited for 80cc chassis and up.

Yes the larger kerf and “bite” of 404 will be harder for any saw.

That being said, I know my ported 70cc saws runs a 404 on a 24” bar with a 7 tooth pretty decently (at times I wished I had a 6 tooth 404 rim), definitely nothing to write home about, but it will run it, depending on how aggressive it’s sharpened and how tall the rakers remain.

I know it's not a 461 but I have run 404-24" fc-fc on ported 572xps. It definitely robs power, but it stays sharp so long! At last year's Twin Cities GTG, everyone's chains were getting beat up in the wood. My saw with the 404 on kept self feeding half way through it's second tank of fuel.

Pitch seems a bit big for a Stihl 461, but I suppose it might work on a 25" or less bar. Don't make that chain pitch this big:

Yes, that is a real penny resting next to this cutter.

I should add 2 of the saws are ported. They’ll pull 28” full comp 3/8 in hard maple with authority. CFB makes an angry 461.
I was thinking a 25” bar in .404 cutting 12”-24”ish wood
I do have a 390 and 288 but my Husqvarna dealers aren’t the best so I’m shying away from having anymore gear tied up with them

I can't confirm on a 461 but I have been running a 24" 76DL 404 setup on a Dolmar 7900, on and off for about 7 years now. I also run a 77DL hard nose bar / chain combo off the 660 on it quite a bit.

It works, you can definitely hear it holding the revs back compared to 3/8 but cut speed is similar due to the higher chain speed.

Also have a 288 clone and it's fine with 404 but can't run the Stihl mount 25" unless I add 1 more link to the chain.

404 b/c sprocket came in today. Certainly no issue with power pulling the chain.
Little jumpy off the roll on the first tank but currently on tank #3 and still self feeding in the wood.
Kinda dissapointed it works so good. Would make a good excuse for a 660
