simple mod, open original muffler port, pull gasket, raise transfer 30-40 thou. make sure they are equal port open side to side. you don't have to touch the bottom of the transfers, you don't have to widen or adjust the I and E. May not be a blue ribbon saw but will firewood well.

So just a muffler mod? Or do you mean open port from inner wall towards muffler and than Port match? Raise transfers? Ok. I was hoping to leave them and mess with intake and exhaust instead since this is my first time. Oh well. Do I not touch intake at all?

The 346 doesn't need much grinding on the ports to make a great saw. Be sure to leave at least 2mm between port sides and piston skirt. Try not to raise or lower the ports on your first time around, spend more time polishing the exhaust port than grinding it and be sure to port match muffler , heat shield and gasket.
Check your squish and see if you can remove base gasket or replace with thinner gasket if necessary to maintain a squish of 15 to 20 thou.
Remove carb limiters and open muffler . I usually add an extra 1/2'' port to this size saw .
Hope this helps a little. good luck
Paul

Square up the intake port some. I don't polish the exhaust to a fine shine. The transfers you can raise with a little patience and 2 of the thin cutting wheels stacked. It doesn't get the whole transfer shaped but will work for this first time. Match the muffler and heat shield to whatever you do to the exhaust port.

Nice let us know how it runs, I just picked up a 346 oe and I think I will do the same. I also just ported a 357, opened up the lower transfers and widened the exhaust and deleted the base gasket, I was very happy with the results. Good luck.
P.S. this is my first post here.

Looks like the intake boot is already smaller than the intake. So I'm guessing you mean square it up where it enters the cylinder? Than blend it back to the boot?

Just started playing with the dremel. Cleaned up the carbon out of the exhaust port. Wow! I can see this is going to take some practice!! What wheels are you all using for this? I've been trying a few but only a couple are small enough to even get inside the ports.

I use some cheap chinese carbides... an assorted set is pretty cheap... then finish with a small sanding drum.

I do upper transfers w/ dental diamonds and polishers.

My logger buddy gave me his beloved blown up 346 for Christmas.
He let his hunting buddy use it and got it back cooked.
I'm lookin for a top end for it. Recently heard that the OEM is about 1/2 cost it was a few months ago.
Anyway......Ill be doing a complete rebuild from the bottom up.

They are fun to run, you can bury the bar, lean on it and they just keep cutting, very impressive speed and torque combination. Probably gonna put a bigger carb on one this weekend, for some reason it feels like it can use more fuel.
