Just starting to get back into this thing. Popped the FW off a minute ago. Is this some type of retainer?

Looks like you found the culprit hopefully. The oil pump side, being metal, seals up ok. I always motoseal the hell out of that fw side. Kinda hard to trust a somewhat flexible piece of plastic with 3 screws and an o ring. For me anyway

The clutch side is the more difficult one to install with the increase in crank diameter, and I believe the oil pump kinda gets in the way also. Old school film negative strip or a strip from a soda can helps get the seal over the lip

I think the 266 is generally an older design. The models and their years may overlap some, not sure. But mostly the same saw

There surely was an overlap in production, as the 266xp was made both before, during and after the 268xp production run.
If you "count in" the open-port non-xp 268, the overlap was of course even longer.

The seal goes in the oiler housing. There's a $5 tool that will save a lot of seals from getting rolled up on that crank lip

Yup, I believe I got mine from parts tree.
