Depends on what you're looking for, but I wasn't thinking about a 261.
I honestly think a 5100S has it beat in the power department.
Does it spool up like a 550? No.
But who's cuttin clouds
Ive never ran a 5100. Only Dolmars ive ran was a stock 6100 and a MillerModded 7910. That 7910 was awesome!!

The 242 is a fast saw in small wood. Rapid acceleration, high no load rpm, but not much torque. Was not designed to be anything else. A stock 353 will murder it. I had two 242xp's one new and one very low hr mint. It got its legendary status from it's advertised no load rpm. Put it in more the 4" wod and the rpms drop way down.
I agree with you in some of your points.
I dont use 242 for bucking, because it doesnt have torque for it, but then, it wasnt what it was made to do either, nor do I use it on oak for the same reason.
I use my 242's mostly in soft wood, it take longer time to fell down a 20" spruce tree compared to my 50cc's, I dont swap saws in this type work so I go straight on with limbing, this type work is where the 242 shine.

Ive had a ported 241c, ported 261, ported 026, ported 262,and a ported 362c. Id take this stock MM 550xp over all them
I told you, you would be doomed when you got the 550!

One thing unmentioned thus far: vibration. I was switching back n forth between a 350 and a 550 last weekend breaking in a rebuild on the 350. There is a noticeable difference in vibs from the saws. The 550 is much smoother. Of course this is not really a factor when making cookie vids but if I had to run one all day it'd be the 550. What a difference 15 years makes on a 50cc saw!

5100S is a very good saw, but it's not as fast as a 550xp. Same wood, chain & both stock, etc...

Thank you I think it runs decent too!

muffler mod 5/8' hole straight out of the front bracket. widened the ports no duration change. lowers untouched. a big help was advancing the ignition. I was unimpressed with 242's until I advanced the timing.

Both saws were running oregon 21. the 2150 has a ported aftermarket 346 topend.

are cut times the only thing that counts with chainsaws ?
lol no, I am one who doesnt care if one saw cut 1 tenth of a second faster then the other one, all I care about is how easy the saw is to work with.
I also find it weird that most discussion is always cutting time, no one speak about balance, body shape, front handle angle, and so on.

I always give the advice to those that ask to just pick the tool thats gonna match what you plan to do with it..or just pick the one you like..lol..the cut speed is so close on all these saws its a wash..ive tried most of them stock and ported...its seriously a wash in the real world as far as speed goes.
