I like the idea of what AM parts work best along with the kit saw. We already know the kit is problematic as is and is going to need something to even run right. If it's who's the best Porter, that leaves me and some others out. I think I can make one fairly strong, but not the same way as others can.

there is the opportunity for some fun collaboration with this build off, I would love to see guys try all kinds of nonsense in the attempt to build the baddest big bar saw
no entry fee for the chains
new off the roll 3/8" .050 Oregon 72CL with old style rakers

Okay, here's how it's gonna roll....

Complete box saw build.
Substituting ONLY for OEM circlips, bearings, gaskets & seals.

I'm cool with this......except the carbs. Even the AM bearings are ok with me.

The only problem with that is the fact that it will intimidate some of the guys that are new to this porting a saw thang.

Not to piss on the party but assuming kit only top ends...
What happens if you get a crappy cylinder with the kit?
What about guys who will buy endless cylinders 'till they get one with favorable timing...

I was involved in some .22 rim fire bench rest competition some years ago, kind of informal fun stuff but still with $ prizes.
A few guys started throwing crazy $'s at it and would just keep buying barrels 'till they got one better than anyone elses, an arms race, lol. Sucked the fun out of it.
Turned into a money game that most didn't want to play and it eventually disbanded.

Well......it looks like the rules are gonna say that you can get any aftermarket top end you want.

When Dave offered prize money I was hesitant to accept it because money makes people do dumb stuff.

Another reason I wanted everyone to do a build thread was so we could see if this "fun" exercise is becoming silly.

I would say if the kits are coming from Dave or another site supplier, perhaps he could "inspect" the bore of each cylinder before sending them to the builders?

I'd tend to want to rule out external cylinder mods like boost ports, welded up transfer tunnels and such.

It seems like the only way to make everyone happy is to have a double build off.
A kit only build off and an unrestricted modified build off.
Most people around here already have something modified they've been itchin to race anyways.

I'm ok however you wanna do it.
If the prize money is a hassle just chuck that idea, no biggie.

There's a plus side Randy..you got lots of feedback which will help you come up with a fair set of rules.

You are without a doubt one of the kindest, and most generous people I know.

Let's just take a few deep breaths.....

I'll lay out the rules tomorrow. The mistake I've made here is not just doing that to start with.

Stock appearance AM jug no boost ports, welded exhaust etc.

Only possible swaps I can see are. Oem carb, coil, clips, wrist pin bearings.

Saw should idle 1-2min before making the cut.

Keep it simple, keep it fun.

If someone wants to go wild with the kit, enter it I the 6ci class...
