Supposedly this & the Ruger Security Six with Python barrel conversions were Real popular in the 1980s in the service revolver competitions in California.

I guess none of them Could get it all the way right in Massachusetts or Connecticut?

More along the line of the barrel was heavier and the s&w was easier/cheaper for gunsmiths to work on the action. and as memory serves there was a higher probability of accuracy from a python barrel since it was swaged. Whether it really mattered or not is highly debatable in my book.

This is always why S&W came out with similar looking barrels on their guns. But by that time the day of the wheel was dying and the auto was starting it's rise.

Nu-Line guns in St. Louis built a *s-wordt ton of Smythons back in the 80's. They had several on display in the shop.
The owner explained it just like you did. The Python action was not easy to work on and had a tendency to get out of time.

One other reason I like the S&W revolvers is the travel distance and fall time of hammer is almost half that of colt and ruger. But I do have a ruger super blackhawk and somewhere a DA model someone gave to me.

I remember reading the article mentioned in this thread- seems it was a popular customization for many reasons.
