Does Wiseco give any recommendations?
Here's why I ask. (Yes, this is from a site that makes rings for 4 stroke engines but I believe it's still applicable and worthy of discussion.)

hmmm... completely outside my area of knowledge, I dont even deal with the same guys at Wiseco who do bike and snowmobile pistons, its an entire different department, I deal with the special projects custom department. Just contact your local cycle shop who are Wiseco dealers and they should have the info you are looking for.

Some might be, some not. They decide based on application. I tried what I tried many moons ago. It didn't work.
DDave's posted link is a good read. Gets your head around the different packages available or custom made just for your program.

So back to nikasil still being proprietary to Mahle...

Do they license it for use by other manufacturers?
Seems a lot of aftermarket brands/suppliers are claiming to sport nikasil bores and many do appear to have that gold hue...

Good question because some of the Hyway cylinders on HL Supply claim to be Nikasil plated. Would be interesting to know of they are or not.

Did a few minutes of reading on nikasil, seems it is trademarked by Mahle but the process (nickel silicon carbide plating) is not proprietary and many companies are doing some version of it.
Mahle developed it in the late 60's so any patents would have run out long ago.

So I have to wonder why Stihl is using a different (and possibly inferior) process?

Mahle wont license their proprietary formula to anyone else.
Totalseal told me Mahle is the best plating and that millenium is the best facility for re-plates
I just know what the guys at Mahle and totalseal told me. None of the aftermarkets jave real TM nikasil but use the name the way we refer to copiers as Xerox machines regardless of brand

Milleniums plating is top notch, I haven’t seen any factory plating that comes close

I'm sure I'm going to be kicked in the nuts for this one maybe but the nikasil platting the Mettor usese is some tuff stuff try flipping mushening the squish band on one of there cylinders and you'll want to jump on a flipping bare trap before you want to do another one.

@Definitive Dave any news on the 046/460 piston progress?
Waaay down the road at this point.
We have five models in production right now, hopefully all of them will be available within a few months. Then we will decide what models to work on next
