WANTED 038 mag p+c or just cylinder.

Curious if anyone possibly has an 038 magnum jug 52mm they would let go of. Buddy of mine took his saw into the shop and they said the top end is toast. Have yet to verify that it needs replaced but, it would be nice to have one found just in case.

Sweet. Ya I'm not sure what the deal with it is yet. I don't exactly trust that shop. They were like well... It's going to cost $600 to fix it but, Come check out our new models over here!
But, that's what he gets for taking it to the stihler... Supposedly it runs fine until it gets down to about half a tank.
Thinking she may just need a fuel line? I'll put the stethoscope on er anyways and see what I find. If she's in good health I'll just give her a fuel and impulse line, filter, clean or replace tank vent and spark plug.

I've never worked on an 038, but I've cleaned up a lot of cylinders for other saws using the info in Randy's video.

If the cylinder just has transfer and can be cleaned, then all you need is a Meteor piston, which saves you a lot of money and keeps the OEM cylinder.

I remember seeing that thread. I don't recall ever working on an 038 but, I don't imagine them being difficult to work on. It is a saw I wouldn't mind owning. My buddy just wants it fixed as a friend gifted him the saw shortly before passing away. I haven't seen very many magnum 2's around so I suppose it is kinda rare?

Well... tank vent had the old style "grub screw" was not venting. Owner said it ran great until about half a tank and it acted like it was running out of gas. So I guess... running lean multiple times. Also had a screen type air filter and mass amounts of carbon build up. Scoring on both sides but, mostly on the exhaust tells me some debris was ran through the saw. Pictures of the cylinder after cleaning. Probably fine.

Sweet looking saw Jason. Looks like the cylinder cleaned up well from the picture. If you end up needing a cylinder, I may have new oem cylinder at home.
I will check the bore size and part number (still in the box) tonight.

I think my cylinder should be fine. Still a few vertical lines but, they're smooth. Followed the mmws guide to cleaning transfer off. Just hand sanded instead. Meteor piston is on the way. Going to try to get some good measurements with my hf micrometer and gage. Anyone know what is ball park spec for piston to cylinder clearance? .002 ish?
Whole saw has gotten a thurough cleaning. She was nasty.

Sorry for getting back to you so late on this thread. I pulled out that new cylinder that I have and measured it it is 52 mm. I also have a brand new OEM 038 crankshaft for sale or trade if you or someone is looking for one.
Your saw is cleaning up nice, nice saws to run.

Nice! This one's got the 52mm as well. I think my cylinder is fine. I took some measurements and skirt to cylinder clearance appears to be just under .002" so that's probably fine. No scoring remains and plating looks good. Just a few vertical dark lines left but, they ain't hurting anything.
