I went over to my neighbors yesterday as he had some big chunks of oak to cut up. I brought him my 36" bar and a new chain. I put it on and went outside to try it out. The bar was pretty much buried and the log was on the ground on gravel, I was having fun but noticed I made an ugly curve cut.

I looked at the chain to make sure one side wasn't dull, and it wasn't. So I tried it again conscious of how I was holding the saw and how I was dawging in the saw, and it cut just fine, nice and straight.

The way I was dawging in the saw was twisting it slightly.

Have you checked the rakers? If one side is uniformly lower than the other it'll be taking a bigger bite, but I agree with what others have said it's probably more to do with the way it's dawged into the wood

I will try to run it without the clutch cover. I did use it for a short time in the shed and yes it cuts sideways. I have never had a saw with a new chain and bar do this. I don't know WTF is going on with it! I'm sure something simple.
Yes, something simple, bar, chain, or drive rim.

Checked, well, what the box said anyways. Stihl doesn't make a .325 pitch chain in .050 do they?
Yeah ran into a mismatch several years ago on my uncles 028.someone had given him the chain and he put it on.sawed with it a day or so and bought a new bar and chain.he thought the bar was worn out.

Easy way to check compare the thickness of the drive links with a dime.

I may have it narrowed down to the chain. Those bastards! I thought I had put the new chain on, but dad said I sent two new ones. He know I have a grinder, so when the other one got dull he put one out of the box on it. Then it cut sideways and put the other one on. I looked at my receipt and it is supposedly 67 dl, 26RS. Chain has a 3 on the DLs so I guess it is .050. That also explains the oil oozing out of the bar! I will check the box when I get back in town.

When I get back Thursday, they are going back to Co Op! It probably was a factory screw up unless they spun it up. I can't remember if the box had a label or was hand written. They should make it up for me but if not, I will send away!

I would not have thought that would have caused it. It always cut one way also. I guess the way we were holding the saw. It also didn't do it as bad on small stuff, usually 10"and up.
