Same as also in the 181/281 isnt it?
The crank in the 181 I have rebuilt is HUGE for an 80cc saw.

I defeated the flood limiter and ported it, runs around 14K
Yup, 281 & 288 are the same crank. I would assume the 181 is as well but I've never messed with one so take that ASSumption for what it is.

The 288 has the same bottom end parts as a 394XP. Think on that for a second. The 288 guts are so strong that husky put a 2mm larger piston on it and it safely turns the rpms you're at with the heavier slug. Tune it up brother!
I agree. The 394 piston is giant, if it has no problems at 13k in my ported 394 it should be fine in a lighter piston 288. Actually I remember watching a video of tree monkeys 288 at 15k and he seems to know what he's doing lol

Yeah monkey magic as I've come to call it is something to behold.

I feel I should apologize to the OP for taking his thread into 288 land. Being new to the 288 club I forgot that if I mention a 288 even as an example the conversation shifts to the 288 fast. All good info but sorry man!

Just looking at the vintage of the 038, I'm wondering if the carb is a pre-EPA carb. In other words, maybe some of the extra torque down low is related to the carb jetting.

A 372 is 71cc and a 038 is 72cc. Not much difference in displacement, perhaps a difference in transfer time/area is likely in the equation. However, with the Tilly and Bing carburetors on the old 038, I'm wondering, would those carbs be able to be adapted to a 372? If so, perhaps the 372 could be given a bit of grunt with an older carb.

My choice would be a 372 with a ported 77cc Big Bore and a modded carb - might as well have the best of both saws.

So here is another question, how many tanks should my 372's new cylinder, piston and caber rings really need before it outshines this mag of mine?

I have just been thinking I could be under tanked as far as performance on this 372xp goes? Don't they need like 10 tanks before they really wake up? This has had about 4 so far?

Doubt it regards slipping an 038 carb onto a 372, the 038's dont have a choke butterfly, choking the 038 was done on a 'mind baffling' flap in the filter...

That can be a highly debated topic my friend. Check compression now, after 5 tanks then after 10. IMO if the compression doesn't increase in between 5 and 10 you're broke in. Another thing to consider is simply the era of the 038, lots of old saws have torque dripping out of them but don't scream like modern saws. With your simple mods, your 372 might not ever exhibit the grunt of that old dog. I've got a ported X-Torq top end I'd be willing to let go of if you're interested.;)

Agreed, I will be looking at a 268 piston pop up soon to gain that extra compression on this 372. The 038 mag has soo much torque. The (era older than the 038) Pioneer I used to have was 83cc I think and I got rid of it as I was low and behold scared of that thing. I mean it had no chain brake, revved low, would in all likely hood kick back at a stupid time and was just plain scary with no AV, slippy non rubber handles. Oh the list goes on. But that thing was next level torque. Who needed cc's and HP back then....

have heard the very early 181 cranks are different. never seen one, tho. not sure on diff's.
First yr 181 crank had smaller end and bearing on flywheelside.
Been there, saw turned into a money pit. But dats otay, now it is a screaming 288 that is buried to da hilt in that massive burr oak I posted about..

Figured somebody would chime in with the difference. Thanks man. Nice when a money pit comes full circle and pays you back every time you squeeze the throttle.:)

I think Simonized saws does that to his 372's I read somewhere, 268 popup piston. I heard they run good that way. Time the cuts between the 038 and 372 I think you'll be suprised by the outcome, torque is deceptive.

Yep I am guessing the 372 will flatten the 038 mag for pace. Kinda same scenario as the hare and tortoise (in this case with the 038, a giant tortoise tank)
