An 038, if properly dicked with
Can run pretty good. Any that I've seen are beat to hell and tuned way fat. They still run decent though and never die
Yes I agree. The one I fixed had a rip in the intake boot you could swing a dead cat through, and like you said she looked like she's seen better days... I can't believe it didn't burn down! I can see why they are liked by so many, especially considering when they were designed.

The 038 series aren't that heavy especially to a guy like me who ran McCullochs for years . I mean what the H,I'll be 70 years old on my next birthday and I don't have a problem with them .
I hear ya, but they just don't seem to fit in my usable saw lineup.

The only problem that I have with my 038 Magnum is the crappy air filter and associated choke flap .........

I'll be looking at a carb swap next time I get to messing wif it

Just have to own them all, rotate them out each day out cutting, never gets old that way. If you think a paltry ole 038 is heavy you should hang with the 40 cc crowd.

OP- makes sense to me. I've had over 50 saws ported by MMWS, and after all is said and done, Id pick my uglier MMWS 288xp over all of them. That includes- 2188 and 064, and 661 (all sold) in the 90cc category. Like someone else said- heart wants what it wants. 288 just does it for me.

Yep I will go with that... Torque hoe :pesas:

Guess I like to see a saw cut and never stop for anything, that is this 038, lean and lean on it and it just cuts faster....
Adam, if you want more torque......why don't you just quit fannying and fix up that 066 you bought a couple of weeks back? :p

Then you'll have torque than you can talk about!

Now you need an 044 0r 046, ported preferably.

Cant cutters are rpm guys, tree cutters are torque guys. You just gotta pick which part of the curve you want your saw in.

My buddy's the original owner of an 038 Mag. A Brazil saw he bought new 25 years ago. I used to think that saw was the badass-ist saw in the world till I ran a ported saw. It spoils ya.

probs, the 044 I had was stock with a base gasket delete.. this 038 has a triple port muffler, base delete, mild intake porting and a widened exhaust port, it rips..

looking at a 272 52mm piston to create a pop up for it.. :risas3:

I kept my 038 Magnum but moved on to ported 044`s first and then 046`s, then built ported hybrids 044/046, kept them all and they are all so close I won`t give them up for the fancy new stuff.
