I'm in Greeneville. About an hour from knoxville give or take, depending on which part of knox you are in. It would be worth a trip down with my saws if you would help me take a look sometime...

I’m in Strawberry Plains which is the East side of Knox County just off the interstate and I’d be glad to help. I’ll send you a message with my phone number and we’ll work something out after the first of the year.

If that 045 had 32 to 1 it wouldn't make it blow blue smoke.16 to 1 would .If it did stall on 16 to 1 it could be a good thing and help preserve the soft elements of the carb from sitting unused for so long .

Were both in Tennessee. I think one of the saws came from Vermont, but we’re about an hour apart here in Eastern Tennessee.
Ahhh. I saw VT. I thought he was from up there. Lol. I'll be OK.

I'd get back into that 046 to figure out what went wrong with your piston and cylinder replacement since you already have some degree of experience and familiarity working on that saw. You'll definitely learn something in the process and should be able to take corrective measures the second time around..., and feel real good about the results if you're diligent and follow good advice.

And Cowroy is good people. He'll keep you in the right direction as will most folks around here. Just take it one step at a time and don't bite off too much at once. That's a pretty nice lineup ya have, there. Good thing ya have that 028 to hold down the fort while waiting on the reinforcements. Those things are hard to kill. LOL

Good luck and keep us posted.

So did any1 hear of putting a 441 coil on a 880 and also a 084 carb instead of the original, it's brand new saw so i don't want to go to mad on mods, it will be used for milling so a muff mod is definitely on the cards,

There's nothing wrong with an 028.I think mine is a wood boss whatever that means .Something minor was wrong with before I got it .It just sits way back in my shed ,kind of out of reach .I use my zero turn mower as kind of an ATV .Two saws,024 and modified 038 Mag,a can of gas,jug of oil ,scrench--off to the woods .

On that 880 which I know nothing about because I've never even seen one .I'd probably not fool with it .I have an 084 myself which of course is rather old school but powerful and as such I'm not going to tinker with it either .Those big displacement saws are torquers .That's where they shine even stock .Besides that if you screw it up the parts for those things put the national dept to shame .

that's why I don't want to go near porting in case some of its torque disappears

084 carb, 088 boot, and 441 coil will make it unlimited.
what kind of carb did the 084 use

I ended up with a 2' x 6' lighted Stihl sign from the recent Higby auction. If anyone is interested I can provide some photos, otherwise it will end up in my new workshop to serve as a night light...

I have an 034 turned 036 and the muffler cover bolt holes are stripped. I got some M5-.08 Helicoils and repaired one of the holes, but it doesn’t feel very good. What would y’all doo at this point aside from new cases? It was like this when it came to me.

A little tip in case you don't know .On metric you subtract the thread spacing from the major thread size .M6 would be 1 so the tap hole size would be 5 mm. Also most of time Stihl used a serrated Belleville type washer which allows a degree of expansion due to the heat and helps prevent pulling the threads .

Looks like stihl might be going the way of the chain stores. Maybe only smaller saws but this is a fairly large chain of stores in upper Midwest. Northern hydraulics/northern tool
