Any idea why the clutch on one of my 031’s is dragging when I tighten the bar cover down? Looks like it’s all assembled correctly but it’s binding when I snug the bar nuts down.

Well the IPL on that thing is 37 pages long .One clutch set up I think shows a friction brake of some sort I can't figure out .That is one strange saw

Great it looks just like another one I had apart and that one worked fine so I put back together and tried 3 different clutch covers including a quick stop style. Still binds, so I tried a different clutch drum and it still binds just a little less. I guess I’ll pull another 031 clutch off a parts saw and try that. Got the saw with a bad ignition recently and got it running great minus this stupid clutch issue.

Now let me tell you a little about Eddie .He went out on various web forums and asked questions regarding mainly Stihl saws and products .Problems, good points etc .He did this on his own and took the info right back to the top brass .He got right down in the trenches with the people who owned and used them .Great guy who at least tried to make a difference .

I have two of them myself .FWIW the clutch side seal is just about impossible to find .They'll handle a 32" bar if they run right .Rings are the same as a 038 Magnum .For some reason it and the 042 were rather short lived in production run.The early ones might be put together with slotted head screws because this was the transition period of using torx heads .If so I'd change them .It might be an urban legion but it's been said the 048 in it's day had the highest power per weight ratio of anything on the market at that time which might just be BS . The 028,038 ,042 and 048 all used the same design with gear driven oil pumps which will interchange .Good luck

028 uses a different pump. 038, 042, 048, and MS380 use the same pump. The worm gear is interchangeable among all of em, (including the 028), as are some of the pump internals such as 'O' rings and such, but the 028 pump body and main pump components are not interchangeable with the other saws.

See attached if ya don't already have em, Pete. Have an 048 project of my own here in a box that I'd like to get to one day. Coupla parts carcasses, too if ya need anything. Also have a complete 042 runner. (Have no idea why in the world they ever made that one.)

And ditto on the good luck.

To convert to an 048, plastics and piston/cylinder swap and you’ll have your 048. Mine all need the bearings and seals I think

The 042 isn't that bad . I'm not sure which came first,042 or 048 .I'll bet it took me ten years to finally get my 042 all together ,no brake .It's 100 percent know but it's a shelf queen .
That saw had a bad coil that would not advance, about drove me nuts .Then I had a real brain fart and got the spacer gasket on the wrong side of the diaphragm ,Flooded, took it apart and assembled it wrong again duh .Made me so mad I banished it to the shelf for about two years .

I think the 042 was first In the mid 70’s, the 042’s I have used the old stihl through the log tag. And my 048’s have the orange tag

What about that 031 pump? Are they different then the 038-048 pump? Never looked close just know they have the same style gear drive

Most likely not . Complete oil pump 031---1113-640-3201. 042----1119-640-3200 . I didn't take the time to check the components like shaft etc . They are pretty reliable pumps .The only problems I've had was one had a crack in the inlet hose and another with a million hours on it the drive gears became worn out . All just stuff one could expect on old saws .Work forever to get them in tip top shape then let them rest on the shelf .Some times I think I must be crazy .
