This is without the 242 "windows" ? Does the windows gain a little power in a 42 or will it just mess things up?
I have a Husqvarna 42, the piston was without windows and I installed a piston with windows. Unfortunately, I don't have a comparison because the saw didn't work before. Gilardoni top hat open ports

Typically open port cylinders are bottom fed and don't need a windowed piston but the 42 is side fed open port so it would seem that it would benefit from the windows.
That's my thought sir. 42 and 246 cylinders seems identical except bore size, so why does the 246 have the windowed piston and 42 not?

Thanks, chipper!

I'm hoping to have more photos up in a few hours, but we'll see how it goes.

I hope Tor is around still, but I hope someone can answer my question. I bought the 42 Special from above post knowing that the piston was bad and thinking that somebody made a piston for it. My ignorance! The saw is in pretty good shape so I'd like to keep it going. After readin 23 pages of this thread, I still have that question. What piston will fit in this thing? The piston itself was 35mm in height. The jug said Gilardoni 6, not 241A. Its a 1993 Special. Closed window or open? Its got a closed on it now. Ebay has a 242 Meteor piston that is closed but will it require some work to get it right? Base gasket delete or machining the base? All help would be appreciated.

AFAIK the 42SP should be an open port cylinder, just as the 42 is. The Meteor 42 piston should work fine unless your 42SP has a closed port cylinder. If your cylinder is closed port like the 242/242XP, there are a couple different pistons on ebay, including one from LilRedBarn. Post a pic of the cylinder bore and measure to ensure it is 42mm.

Yes, open the cylinder and see, because it doesn't necessarily have to be all original
