What do you suggest Wayne? Sizes to fit Stihl air filter covers. New and old.
Too bad they didn't make them in orange or red.

It all depends on what is going to fit on the saw properly. I used 3/4 inch i.d. on that 026 cover.

Part of the problem is the older saws were designed so that warm air from the engine would flow back to the carb to keep it from freezing in the winter. In warmer weather, this just serves to plug the filter with chips faster.

Any method of blocking off the air from the engine and opening up other sources of air will work better in warm weather. For example, on 460 and 660 saws, you can remove that black plastic that bridges the air filter cover and the top cover.

Makes sense now Mike. Probably why I see 2 different air filter covers for 026s. The regular cover and winter cover with the black extension pieced. Hold heat in better.

No, my woman had a Dr. Appointment and brought me lunch that day and snapped a few, I never get many pictures of jobs...I'm always scared I'm gonna break my phone.
Have her take pics of herself instead. Post 'em up...

Once upon a time I'd have agreed with this statement word for word. The MS261 system looks fantastic and appears to tick all the boxes with a auto style round filter with huge surface area (pleats) and a particle separation system (air injection) to compliment the system as a whole. But after putting many hours on MS261's I have founds this air filtration system to have major faults (this is in MY conditions cutting Aussie hardwood species). Both my MS261's leak/let in air at the rubber seal which is not practically fixed with grease. The air injection system draws in air from the front area of the saw NOT the rear where cleaner air is available. This translates to fines not chips packing up the filter. Those who run these saws will notice the filter gets packed on the top & bottom not evenly including the sides. The filtration system works MUCH better if you ditch the top cover cowling so the saw draws air from the rear of the saw. This is not a practical solution I use but it works much better. I've tried plugging the air injection port which helped but was not perfect. The MS261 filter to the naked eye looks near perfect and it is much better than older saws of yesteryear but it could be largely improved. I say improve the seal & ditch the air injection and make a cowling that has fine mesh holes drawing in air from the rear end of the saw. I've come to this conclusion through most days having to clean MS261 filters. The saw dust is SO fine that gets packed in will not come out by tapping the filter it needs to be vacuumed out or blasted out with compressed air. Yeah so IME there is a lot of room for improvement with this state of the art air filtration system.
Agree completely

I think frogskins and a closing of the particle separation port would improve things a lot. Despite the MS261 filter system leaking, its only really fine ground wood dust media getting past and upon piston/case inspection about every six months when I strip them down for a clean and possible ring replacement. I don't see any negative effects from stuff being ingested. I've come to believe muh 261 don't mine eatin a lil wood dust for breakfast.
Friends 261 filter came apart and sucked loads of wood in but comp remains high.
I also notice lots of fine dust on the filter of mine so regular cleaning, and same in another friends, it's the same with husky air injection except the hd2 filter keeps it mostly out, I've had chips and dust getting past the max flow on my 661 too around the screw mount hole

661 with max flow, was perfect for a few big logging sessions then started leaking chips through the middle, it had the black cover so changed for backing plate and it did it again, used grease, the little foam washer looks grotty as hell, caught it before it got to the carb

Put the hd2 back on for now till I can knock up a fix, got a backlog of things and the hd2 worked fine, it just needed cleaning constantly20180308_092808.jpg
