Anyone ever tried hazel or holly for a handle

I make walking sticks for our local charity shop and use both and the young holly makes nice strong sticks

Clean up results:
The Kelly cleaned up nice to reveal that it’s a VULCAN. Some more sanding to get the hard scale off and it will be ready to hang. Profile comparison with my Collins, check out how much wider the high carbon line is on the Kelly.

This ended up revealing itself to be a cast turd. I’ll hang it anyway and it will make a good kindling splitter for the house.

This ended up being a Master Mechanic. Unfortunately, it has been through a fire and lost its temper. I’m going to try and restore the Temper on the bit. It’s got a nice shape and if I can harden it back up then clean up the pole it will be a keeper.

Yes it was. The pole is mushroomed but not cracked, it will come back to life.

I got my cruiser done, best handle I’ve made by a mile. The head fit is tighter than a nuns (well, you know) and the length feels great. It’s my new favorite axe. Now I’m conflicted on whether to burn the handle or not.

Do you think the true temper Kelly previous owner ever oiled the handle lol. That feeling of holding up that Cruiser after all the sweat that's gone into it is what its all about. Here is a $15 hardware hatchet I used for kindling for a few years untill my 6y/o nephew referred to it as 'my axe' so I decided to mirror polish it up with multiple grits 80-2000 followed by 2 different polishing wax bars (green & white). It will go under his Xmas tree once I've re-hung it with a little longer handle.

Anyone got some tips for seasoning wood properly? Got an itch to make my own handles, I blame this thread. Also have you guys seen a Collins like this before?
