I was given an old tiller recently. I got it to "run" but there must be some linkage missing as there seems to be no connection to the throttle. It will start and idle but the throttle does nothing. Anyone know about these things?
From the model and SN it is probably 70s-early 80s vintage.1000003618.jpg1000003617.jpg1000003610.jpg1000003615.jpg1000003609.jpg

Carb is an exact copy replacement of what was on it. I had to clean a fair amount of rust from all over.
I found a couple YouTube vids that were close but not close enough.

Gotcha, is the governor spring attached to throttle and governor arms?

No and I can't figure out how to make that work. I have the spring that was on it but attaching doesn't do anything and falls off when I pull the throttle to stop.
A smaller spring might work but I didn't have any in my misc spring bin :p
I think all it needs is a spring to pull the gov arm down.

That is why it won't throttle up. You need that spring in there and it HAS to be the correct springs. Something that just fits won't work. Use an online ipl with the numbers on the shroud to get the right one and put it on like in this picture.

That spring looks just like what I have. However, when I pull the throttle lever to stop the lower end of the spring jambs up into the gov arm and falls off. Also, there is no tension on the spring at all...just hangs there.
I don't have the other, taller rod shown. Do I need one? Looks easy to make if so.
The ipls I've found only go back to the mid 90s. This is 15+yrs older

The other rod is for the fixed throttle. You don't have that. You either have something damaged or installed incorrectly. We need better pictures with the tank removed for clarity.

I tried attaching the spring differently and it stays put.
Pics at full throttle and stop...
Now, to put it all back together and try again :p

Well, it sort of worked. I bent the lower tab down and adjusted everything. But the carb will not throttle to full…have to move that top lever by hand to make that happen. It just chugs and smokes until I push the lever to full.
Hey, a 70s motor that was free, :p
May rig up some sort of secondary throttle

Don't rig anything up. Sounds like you need to tune the carb but before you do that you need to make sure the governor is adjusted correctly.

Loosen the pinch bolt on the governor arm.

Move the governor arm and hold it in the wide open throttle position.

While holding the arm turn the governor shaft the arm pivots on all the way till it stops in the same direction you are holding the arm.

Tighten the pinch bolt and you now have the governor mechanically adjusted.

Ah, cool.
So, take it all apart again…great 🤣
My wife came out to see what all the shouting was about, lol

Worst case…I learn a bunch about these motors…that have been made for a good 40 yrs :p

Nope. Can't make the adjustments when it's apart. Has to be assembled.

Hmm, don’t think I can get in there without pulling the carb/tank. All the belts, etc are in the way.
