I have too much time on my hands and started experimenting with dye on the plastics of my 2021 390xp. Some say u can only do black but I think this red turned out awesome. I spray painted the top filter cover, just as an experiment. Don’t do that. I already ordered another one and will by dying it red as well. Just 175 degree water and Cherry Red Rit dye. Hopefully when I’m completely done it will look pretty amazing.

I've never dyed any parts yet either. Just curious how it holds up with scratches or cleaners? Is it truly semi-permanent? Thx. timg

From what i have heard from everyone yes. The color has been absorbed into the plastic. I tried scratching it and it’s still red. Some other guy dyed his flip caps black and put them in gasoline for 30 minutes and it didn’t take any color off.

How do you keep it off the decals?

Brother I just experimented and left the decal on there. The 180 degree water didn’t bother it. I mean it’s a chainsaw so I’m sure the adhesive is hi-temp. Plus if it had peeled off u can always buy another decal. So yea I’m sure it’s still bright orange under that lol. But yes, I was very impressed that it was flawless after the dyeing process.

The longer you let it simmer, the deeper the dye goes into the plastic. I’ve heard of guys leaving it in for a half hour or so and it’s no more than a superficial coating. At 3 hours, it goes about 1/3 of the way through the plastic.

There is a aftermarket company out there that offers white plastic for atleast the ms660 maybe more idk but that way you can dye your saw whatever color you like. I've personally only done black but have been really happy with that.

So the dye doesn't affect the color of the decal? I'm a little confused.

Not in this particular case. The Decal is a sticker. It doesn’t absorb dye like the plastic covers do.

Thanks. So you took the rope and pulley out or is it died too? I have never dyed anything but I have a saw I might try it on if I knew the do's and don't.

Yes I took the rope and pulley out and reinstalled afterwards. That was a learning experience for me

The picture I just posted was less than an hour. Most things I dye stays in for at least 90 minutes.

What is the procedure for this? Like pour hot water in a bucket and leave until it cools or metal container and keep it on the stove?
