325 chains.. is this just how they are? Or is something wrong?

Not to start a grinder-vs-hand filing debate, but.........

I have an Oregon 620 grinder that I impulse-bought 2 weeks ago, still new in the box. I was going to return it because I was having a hard time justifying it, thinking hand results would be better. Maybe I should learn to use it and give it a shot instead of all these file guides?

I know that hand filing will produce more of a razor edge, and that makes sense for a knife. But for a cutter that's flying through hardwood, that paper-thin edge is gone in seconds. I would think getting the cutter shape right (and consistent!) is more important, and a grinder is pretty decent at that.

Not sure what you paid for that 620, or if it's returnable, but you can buy them for $270 shipped online. I got mine a couple months ago. Says tecomec instead of Oregon, but it's the same thing.

Out this am sharpening chains. This is a
.325 semi chissle. Sharpened free hand 3/16 file. Dont normally run semi but this chain was free so not complaining. Lol.

Semi cuts a lot better with a deeper gullet. Do a test to understand what I mean. First try some cuts with it the way you have it. Then break out the files. Push down and back with the file to cut the gullet deeper. Maybe two or three swipes. Leave the top plate alone. I find if you file properly the gullet only needs filed once in a while. Try some cuts. You’ll notice the chain self feeds much better. You can play around with the raker height. I also find chains with those dual hump safety rakers you have to take moreoff the raker than a normal chain to compensate. That said... be careful with taking too much off with semi... the line between too aggressive and just right is a lot thinner than normal chisel chain because semi doesn’t cut as smooth to begin with.

Not the greatest pictures but hopefully you guys can see what I’m talking about, look at the gullet and amount of hook. This is stihl rm semi chisel. 69789D01-EC38-4BA5-8204-E179FB256773.jpeg9540E132-2320-4919-A53B-B254E29A7242.jpeg

I took four passes off the rakers after the pic. It seems to self feed pretty good.
I would have to drop down a file size to go back in the gullet a little further. File fills the whole space. I went down till i was just marking the strap. Dont want this chain too agressive. My 14 year old son runs this saw most the time.

Relax guys. It's a 2500HD truck. I back the tires on a couple of 2x8s and raise the truck a bit. It's just about perfect height.
Several guys have used my setup. Works well for me.

I’ve seen it in action it’s actually pretty mint

I have a stump vice That works when I’m away from the truck and trailer but I was trying to get a set up like Jeff’s to maybe weld to the side of the dump trailer
