So...... I have a few rolls of .058 semi chisel. And a couple odd .063 bars.....

Happy to report that I have experienced zero cutting issues thus far.

Pleasantly surprised by the way the chain cuts and noodles as well. Everyone I had talked to was adamant that it was crap chain. Was not the case at all.

So yes I am that cheap prick that is running miss matched equipment


Look for some used once in need of sharpening .058 chains for sale cheap in the near future

My neighbor runs 3/8 x 050 chains on an 058 bar.
He asked me to dress the bar for him once and I tried to close the rails up as much as possible.
As far as I know, he's still running that bar. I think he's a 3-4 cord a year guy

I've ran .050 0n .063 bars by not paying attention and just slapping a chain on. Muh Farm Boss gave zero fukks.

I ran .050" in .058" bars, 18" & 20", no issues whatsoever.
IMHO people are overthinking many chainsaw related things.

For obvious reasons You can not run .058" chains in a .050" bar.

I'd be careful, once friction and heat comes into play the bars kerf might tighten a bit.

On some Dolmar/Makita branded Oregon bars I noticed quality to have gone down compared to bars I have from 10+ years ago.
It is a shame really, luckily I don't wear bars out, I just stockpile new ones with the intent of never needing them.

Yes I have cutting up some telephone poles. Had a little bit of sparkling oil but it cleared up.
Also free spun pretty good before using.

Maybe Oregon just labels the bars .058" with them actually being true .063".
Saving on specifically "making" true .058" bars?!
It is just 1/10th of a millimeter, that is close to splitting hair.

The important thing is that the bar works for You!

That’s funny I bought a loop of nos Carlton.058 and it fit in my .050 versacut bar but c85 Husky chain wouldn’t. Oregon has been sold a couple times in the last few years so that’s not usually a great sign.

To the original topic, I think the sharpness of the chain is more important than a .005 difference in the rail. As long as the rails are good you’re good to party

Loose rail allows chain to lean one way or the other - curved cuts. Seems everyone is getting sloppy with the.050 bars. stacked up some feeler gauges a on a new bar .058 slid right in, supposed to be for .050 that' is a lot play. i can see maybe .004 over max. Temps is not going to make that kind of differance. In My world .004 per side is a lot of slop.

I wonder what the optimum clearance is for lubrication purposes? And it will be different for plain drive links versus links with lubrication 'wells' built in.
