And that's what caused the funky idle.
Not the ring, but the squish clearance or lack thereof.
Among other things, yes I would agree.

If you spin it over 3 or 4 times it gives a better reading. I use .030" most of the time. .014" is about .009" with plastigauge. I run a 372 like that for a tank or 3 bucking some maple. It lived. No touching but the burn pattern didn't look right so I checked.
I found the same thing in several Stihl three and four series I tried to run down right tight 7-8 thou. Idle sucked and vacuum falls off quick. The wash pattern was no where near "right." It ran with issues beyond just idle. Detonation was present and it took material off the band and left it on the plug.

I just did a Google search on plastigauge. I'd heard of it but never seen exactly what it is. Looks pretty straight forward
Yup straight forward a measurement as will ever find.

It's accurate but you have to pull the jug every time. They stick to the squish band a lot of the time. I've been meaning to try spray cooking oil to keep it from sticking
Spray canola works most times but the plasti does stay up top sometimes. I just pull the jug every-time and make sure it is right. Have been know to do a hot check with approx 0.012 solder twisted to both sides directly over the wrist pin.

this saw kind of reminds me of brads work. wide ass ports.
I thought the same thing at first glance. I do not think Brad would let this thing leave his shop in this condition with that many problems. One thing can be said about his port design/shape/width, he is looking for maximum top end flow. I'm sure his race saws are in the hunt for the win. I'd like to see him do an alky or funny fuel build on here. seems best suited to his style of port work.

Send me that jug. I'd like to take a crack at fixing it to build a racer. Never built a hot rod 372, yet.

So how do u measure?

I'll step on my tongue here. I think Scoot would say,
" There is no measurement."
Experience and the constraints of what material is available in what areas determines the cross section and overall volume of the port based on real world experience and what he has learned thru the years. I myself have found no standard or measurement to go off of. I can tell you what does not work if that helps. This intake port in this thread is a prime candidate for what works but not so well.
Does that help?

Sorta! Lol! I know what my skirt width is and work within thoso but I do measure for future reference

Keith I found that .030 solder won't compress enough to be accurate. I have .023 that works great for shooting for .020. And like lightning said, if it's bigger than that I twist it, it compresses easier twisted than bigger solder.

Thanks for the anwser. Seems when the constructive/informative posts start everyone disappears? Seems the drama attracts more?

Sometimes the build threads get repetitive, after the same questions are asked 100 times. There are relatively few guys that are extremely knowledgeable on the subject and even fewer that can articulate that knowledge, through words and pictures, so that the novice can follow along and learn something that they can later apply.

That and some people just can't turn away from a train wreck. :D

pretty close, the reality is that the area of the port window should be the same as the area of the throttle shutter, but if the boot is bigger I go with that instead.

I agree. Randy and Mdavlee have been generous enough to put up with my questions that I bombarded them with over the last several years!!:D

Aren't most intake openings at the wall already at least as big as the boot?

Wow! I definitely did not know that.
So from pics posted of porting, it looks like many open the intake too much.
