I seek answers that are "as a general rule", as scientific answers would surely be insufficient.

So, I have a Stihl 4-Mix and the recommended oil is....

Stihl Ultra mixed at 50:1.
Flashpoint: 428°F
Viscosity @ 40°C = 46-52 (49)
Viscosity @100°C = 7.9-8.9 (8.4)

And I wish to use...

Belray H1R mixed at ?? Ratio
Flashpoint: 466°F
Viscosity @ 40°C = 124
Viscosity @100°C = 12.69

My first priority is engine protection. I have to choose a mix ratio so my biggest concern is protection at high rpm, high temperature. Would it make sense to use the math and say

12.69 ÷ 8.4 = 1.51

Then...

1.51 x 50:1 = 75:1

Mix ratio of 75:1 ???

Or, just start @ 50:1 and wing it from there?

Or, write Stihl and let them refer me to a Stihl dealer? Seriously, that's what they would do.

I have a stihl 4 mix polesaw I use once or twice a year. I use the canned 4 stroke fuel mixed 32:1 with amsoil dominator. It can sit for a year and fires right up when I need to use it.
I think getting good gas is very important and unfortunately pump gas is iffy. It is kinda like FD oil. The threshold is too low for FD, or I'd like an FE category to show which oils are super clean.

I only run non ethanol fuel in my outdoor equipment. The polesaw and trimmer get canned fuel.

Well, I've decided to not dilute H1R past 50:1 and I think 50:1 is too much H1R oil. Diluting H1R is off-label and throws a kink in the composition balance

Thank God we finally have another oil thread🙄
I’ll just have to start ignoring these. It ain’t exactly rocket science—equipment used to run on a splash of 30w tossed into the tank. There are so many variables that recommending one blanket oil is not a great idea; what you think smells good might give me a headache and vice versa. Find something that works for you and stick to it. Except if it’s HP Ultra;)

And yes, I know that engines have changed a lot since 30w worked, but so have oils.

Or just run 32:1 the happy, medium for
new engine or old engine technology. With a high-quality oil you can’t go wrong. If you’re in the desert thirsty, would you want a bigger cup of water or a smaller cup of water? No water kills, water keeps you alive.

I doubt it would run at all with H1R 32:1.

Of course it would. Why would you think otherwise?
Because I tried Schaeffer's 7000 boat oil at 32:1 which is like water compared to H1R and that Schaeffer's was a disaster. Blackest plug after one tankful, plus it just didn't feel right. I've tried many oils in that blower. Some at 40:1. Let me just say that 50:1 runs much better. Saber @64:1 runs great. Edit.... Pic below of oils I have used. So, when I think 32:1 with H1R wouldn't work....

It runs fine in chainsaws at 32:1 and is very clean. Have you tried dominator yet? I know it was recommended at least a few months ago when you came here or on AS questioning it

I have not tried it yet. Amsoil said it would probably be "overkill". That didn't stop me, but it is just down the line a bit.

I just finished running 4 gallons worth of mix with Redline Racing Oil at 32:1 through my 261 and no plug fouling. I'm not endorsing Redline--it was just an experiment for myself. I've now switched over to Dominator at 32:1 with E0 fuel. I can say that both Redline and Dominator smell pretty good out the exhaust.

I surely don't want ho hum or stinky exhaust.

With many of the veterans here that saw the oil testing done a few years ago and with all the recommendation since, dominator should’ve been at the top of your list.
