I helped a friend cut up some white pines that snapped off in a winds storm today. My little 015L did marvelously cutting the 12"DBH pines in more manageable pieces for the tractor to haul away. On a bigger one, I brought out my 288 with a 32" bar on it, and all my wood cuttin friends were taken aback that I had such a big saw. After 5min of explaining to them what I have and how MMWS did some touching up to it, I thought to myself. Is this 288 really that big? Or are my friends so institutionalized into 60cc with a 20"bar is all they'll ever need.... anything more is just a waist.

I think 288 is definitely up there in "big saw" territory. Wastefully big??? I don't think so, unless all you do is limbing. ;) Most of the wood I work with does not call for my 394, but I'm sure glad I have it when the work does call for it's use. :) Large hardwood demands alot from any saw, nice to have that raw power in those situations.

That said, I'd love to own one -- I'd just have a hell of a time finding more than 2 or 3 trees a year that needed it. :) . . .I wonder if my kids would think needing a reason to buy a bigger saw justifies a move westward.

I always grouped sizes at 30-60cc as small, 60-90 as medium and 90+ as big. But never looked at a big saw as unnecessary. It may be rare (once a year) to use something that big, but you should seen the jaws drop. 32"... you thought I brought out a light saber.

If you live in California and move any farther westward, you'll be in the ocean you dumb sonofabitch.

Last year I acquired a MMWS044 and it was shipped to our store in Minneapolis. My boss brought it up for me and couldn't believe I had ordered a 24" bar for it.
He owns 3 or 4 saws but still refers to the. By the size of the bar. You should have seen his face when the next one was a MMWS MS660...

You get 1- 90cc saw, you'll soon have the need for 2 more.

Ask me how I know.
