Decided to pull apart my 500I and mess with it. Found a lovely casting defect in the cylinder walls.
I was bummed at first but decided if it hasn't caused issues yet it's probably fine.

The squish also had quite a bit of variance of it. .030-.040, so for the time being I ended up just widening the exhaust port but keeping it stock height then I cut .10 off the base until I cut the squish band.

@Absolution - I know right! I have never seen one that worn out before. He's already texted me he can't believe how much better the saw is cutting. I also dressed the bar and fitted a new chain on it for him.

@bigbadbob - gosh that's hard to say, I do know he bought it used. Probably quite a few hours...but the saw still has great compression.

IMG_5458.jpegIMG_5459.jpegMy 166 got a carb rebuild and a fuel and impulse line today. The low side needle wont stay put. As it’s running it backs out a little bit, requiring readjustment. I didn’t have that problem before so sumpins up. I’ll get it fingered out eventually.

IMG_5462.jpegIMG_5460.jpegIMG_5461.jpegResolved the idle mixture problem by swapping screws. They look the same to me but it’s the machines opinion that counts. Made one adjustment and then did my best to wear it out. Ran great.
Oh, broke a chain this morning. I put a heavy nick in the drive link while sharpening, the 166 pulled it apart.
I found the small piece wedged in the rails when I tried to fit another chain. Rascal cut like a demon but it’s no good if you have to damage the chain.

I went to do some basic performance mods on a cherry Husky 55 ( gasket delete, muff mod, and timing advance). I quickly found out my gasket delete wasn’t gonna work as the factory squish was at 0.030”. Rather than quitting, I chucked the jug in the lathe and cut the band flat. (took 0.030”) It’s gonna be hard not doing normal port work at this point, but there literally is no meat around the exhaust port to allow for opening things up.22C5FBA0-EF92-4067-9055-A9B22DA220D6.jpeg082B53CC-6787-4FD4-855D-62197BEC50A0.jpegBC5D389B-B06B-4926-9262-A04B2220182F.jpeg

My buddy dropped off his 271 for me to fix. Said the “chain gets loose then too tight”…….well, I found the problem.
I had a customer come into the shop and tell me his new chain got jammed up, after pulling the clutch cover, found that the chain wedged itself in a sprocket that looks much like the one in your picture...I told him he should replace it with a rim sprocket and change it out a little more often. Its funny when people say "I have to change that out?" not realizing maintenance is more than putting in gas, b/c oil and a new chain because they are to lazy to sharpen their last new chain.

I've heard the damndest saw question yet, bar none. A friend asked me why his Stihl 391-looking saw was making a bit of a buzzing noise and he showed me a video. I guessed some clutch issues, and asked the backstory. "Well, I first noticed it the same day that I was bucking up a log and the tank handle was touching my leg and welded a little circle of denim to the phone that was in my pocket." How the fuch does a plastic tank handle weld denim to a phone case? The dude is not a liar or bullchitter, but I'm stumped. He said he replaced the coil but the noise is still there.

I'd suspect "friction weld" vibration of the handle against the hard surface of the phone case , they weld aluminum panels that way in some aircraft production.

Buzzing could be compression or vacuum escaping from a seal or gasket, they're a clam shell, right?
