Why not just remove the spit back cover?Huumm why did I do this and is it going to help with what has planned. Lol. View attachment 139166 View attachment 139167 I think it will.
It will still provide protection for the filter and still flow better in theory just an experiment. Why not just remove the spit back cover?
Rather than grinding the slots

It’s been tested before. Most 460’s made more power with the spitback cover left over the intake inlet. It suprised a lot of people when it was discovered. It will still provide protection for the filter and still flow better in theory just an experiment.
Now I hope I didn't ruin a good spit back cover. Lol.It’s been tested before. Most 460’s made more power with the spitback cover left over the intake inlet. It suprised a lot of people when it was discovered.
My 064 has the foam one 'huumm' I haven't tried using a plastic one it not really sure if one would fit it but I'm with you I would prefer to have the plastic spitback cover over the foam one to me it would be less restricted. It depends on the saw, some seem to spit back more than others. I would prefer the plastic shield to the foam, the foam is not 100%. (The plastic shield is the newer design, I'm sure they did it for a reason). I believe 044s were available in the late 80s, and the 046 came out in 1995 (or 96 in the USA).
With 440s (or AM 660s w/o the spitback guard) I always make sure the filter is the "same way up", as the spitback is always on the bottom. If you rotate the filter you soon have oil on both the top and bottom. Keeping it only on the bottom improves filter performance (IMO).
Foam would be less restrictive. Think about it... the air has to make a few 90 degree turns pretty much with the plastic one. Foam is a less convoluted path I guess. Bunch of small holes. Just a hunch... I guess time the cuts between the two with same b/c is the only way to tell for sure.My 064 has the foam one 'huumm' I haven't tried using a plastic one it not really sure if one would fit it but I'm with you I would prefer to have the plastic spitback cover over the foam one to me it would be less restricted.
