Well, I just put a more restrictive muffler on Asian Twin #2 today, and I'm telling you it has more torque, and the Hi does not need to be adjusted as far out.

Now I'm not claiming this is a universal thing, but on the saw I have, it worked. (Asian 660 w/Cross P+C w/o base gasket).

My theory, and it is just a theory (I welcome comments both pro + con), is that these saws tend to have a lot of intake (often 82 or more) and that restricting the muffler a bit is keeping more of the charge in the cylinder.

I tested it today (with my neighbor who is getting this saw) in Ash, we both dug the dogs in and wrenched it and did not slow it down. He was giddy!

I took a replacement Huztl muffler, drilled a 1/2" hole in the back of the baffle, and left the rest of it as is. Works for me!
Try a stock muffler then, might be more yet to gain Mike

I think it is pretty well documented that you can usually improve upon a stock muffler.

However, I think there is also sometimes a point of diminishing returns. (Not saying on all saws, I think it is dependent on the porting, etc).

The 660 now runs as I hoped it would run, I'm not changing anything.

I know that on my 044 I put a dp cover on it and liked it. Then I opened up the dp cover. I did not like it, the saw did not idle well, and lost some throttle response. I put a stock dp cover back on it, and used the other cover on my 046.

I don't recall seeing videos of various muffler mods, usually just stock + modded, period! Would be interesting to see if they reach a point where gains diminish.

Dyno would be great, but seems like they disappeared.

Jeff, you saw Asian Twin #1 run at the GTG. Now Twin #2 runs just as strong!

125% of exhaust port size on my ported xpw is the best opening I’ve found on that particular saw after trying few different things. Idles good and good manners.

I also did not fully remove the baffle on this one, or the one you ran at GTG.

It felt pretty good, didn't it? Not as fast as yours or Jeff's, but solid.

Yeah it wasn’t peaky. I think there is a point where too much opening overruns the stock jetting/carb then you have to consider carb mods probably. You could probably open up the area under the side deflector.

@Redbull661 has done lots of testing. Do t remember what he came up with. But that's on one particular saw

Kevin, if I had the talent, I'd make em like that! But seriously, some tests would be nice.
I've done a bit of muffler testing with a 044 hybrid.
I don't think the saw lost any with the triple port muffler but it did feel a little more high strung/racey.

I remember watching his stock 461 video where the saw lost power with triple port vs dual port with the baffle in. Ported saw probably gains with triple port?

Gained with another opening

I don't doubt that, but I think you are missing something I said. I think it depends on the saw, and porting on that saw.

I think it is a mistake to presume that because far more muffler opening worked on one saw that it will work on all of them. IMO, it is more likely to work on a ported saw, and less likely on a non ported one. I also think the timing #s play a role.

And not that I like to quote that AH (starts with a J), but he said that some of his saws lost power if the muffler was opened too much.

I think you are judging too quickly.

The Cross MMWS cylinders on my Asian twins were as close to identical as any two cylinders (OEM or AM) I have ever seen (my other two Cross cylinders were both different than these and themselves). I think these two were made back to back.

The only difference in assembly was the muffler baffle and outlet. Twin 2 was more aggressive, and I expected it to run stronger. When I put them both to wood, I was pleased with Twin 1, but not Twin 2.

Although about everyone told me it was not the muffler, I ordered another one and modded it less. I am now very happy with how Twin #2 runs. Don't know what else to say.

I don't believe any 2 aftermarket jugs to be equal. Only way to test is to use the same jug with different muffler.
