I know I'm a newb and this is a dumb question, but if everyone is deleting base gaskets and taking material off the base to tighten the squish what purpose is it to cut squish bands to then make the squish larger again?

The aim is to create squish of about .020. If it is too loose, the engine is not as efficient, if it is too tight it may blow up when it gets hot and expands.

Often, deleting the base gasket alone will not produce the correct clearance. Also, porters often want to take more off the base to get the ports where they want them. They then cut the squish band to get back to approx .020.

Putting a 380 60cc together from parts. Stole the piston and AV from the 365 I parted out. The used 380 cylinder was in a batch of parts I bought. New oem ring.
Using dirko ht for base since I ran out of gaskets = time to order another batch. Echo lines for fuel and impulse.

Then the next in line a T3 60cc

The first of my Solo Twins finally went back together this week. I have a second one that has the very rare 110cc topend. I'll be doing it ASAP while the assembly is all still fresh in my mind. This one took about 12 hours to figure out and put back together!

My great friend Rob stopped by to see me, so he got the honors of firing it up for the first time, since I'm recovering from surgery.

All done and made some test cuts in ash. Now to compare 60cc open port to the ole 034 036 62cc closed port someday.
Did that with a 3750 and 262 way back and 3750 was right on the 262 heels. But me and my friend preferred the 3750 over the 262 after cutting all day with them.

How can you tell the 100cc version from the 110cc?

Mike is correct in his response but I'd add that the more typical reason for cutting the band is to reduce the volume of the combustion chamber to increase compression.
Then the base is cut to set the squish clearance.

Oh ok that all makes sense then. Thanks! Didn't think about port timing and all that

Should have said something. Know a guy selling one in NY.
Send me the info please, the one i bought ends up being an old model without many of the tools I was expecting.
I have a line on another one through the barshop folks but they aren't certain the owner is still around.

A new bench is on my bench! My Son In Law (they are remodding the kitchen) was throwing out the old kitchen table, so I told him to throw it my way. With the leaf it is 3 X 5. So I added a shelf under it, and now it holds 10 saws and still has the top free! I like it!
