old 040 - those flag style brake handles on the 600 Series saws are getting hard to find. I discovered recently that the brake handle from the PM10 Series type saws will bolt in place, but are about 2" taller.

Hey Mark, that's good to know. I did see a PM 655 get parted out recently on eBay. I noticed that the chain-brake assy looks just like the older/first? style, but has a small bolt on flag rather than the full wrap flag.....Oh, I used the clutch cover/brake assy from another 610 I had here, the saw originally had the older style but was broke. I'll use the one that's on it now until I come across another.

The brake lever on that one will also accommodate the wrap around brake handles found many of the 600 Series saws. In fact, you can cut and shape the wrap around brake handles to make a very workable substitute for that type of flag.

image.jpgimage.jpgThe 635 upgraded to a 642 when I uncovered a 58mm cylinder in the new machine. Thats 106cc’s. Runs about like it too. So now I have this real purdy 642 and a 635 that looks like Fido’s ass. I’m good with that.

Cut about a half cord of Black Locust today with the 577. This is an impressive little saw for 58cc. RPMs a bit low at 12000 but way more torque than I expected. It reminds me of the old 266 I had in the 80s, power wise, just lower rpms. It balances perfectly with the 24” bar. I cut some stumps to 20” and it never slowed down…even leaning on it a bit. It cuts circles around my 359 which surprised me.
It was sputtering like it had water in the gas but…new gas. I’ll try a different fuel filter and see what happens. I’ll also try one of the nos carbs I have :p
I had just cleaned the carb that is on it as it looked brand new. But, with sitting for 20yrs it probably needs a kit…found on Amazon…

The air filter is a big problem…sucked lots of fines into the filter box…and motor.
No damage shows on the intake side of the cyl.
18.2# with standard 24” bar, full comp chain. This saw should handle a 28 with no issues. I’ll try the one lite bar I have.

I had some time to get these three going.
One 041 just needed carb, lines and rings, The other took new crank bearings, MM, BGD, and a AM piston too.
They both gain a fair bit of rpm on their sides, especially clutch up and sometimes cut out when brought back level without a blip. I am wondering if this is just how this model acts? No air leaks found with the brake cleaner method. I have not done press/vac yet.
The 051 is definitely a Thumper and handles about like a bag of concrete.

Bought a Poulan 3300 (I have 3 now) for $80 yesterday.
Came with a good 18" bar.
Bought it for parts but it starts easy & runs good.
Seems to be pretty low hour.
Has a Rim drive on it so someone has messed with it.
Prolly slap a new Caber ring on it & BGD & new fuel lines & call it good. Lol

My buddies 572. He’s been complaining that this one and another one have been overheating. I pulled the intake partition, added some insulation and cover it with foil tape. Also opened up the muffler quite a bit. Guess we’ll see if it makes a difference, I suspect it will.IMG_0713.jpegIMG_0717.jpeg I found metal filings on the fuel line magnet while investigating possible issues. Not sure where they came from…IMG_0715.jpeg

Have you been opening tank vent up. Dealer said vent is limiting fuel causing lean condition.

No I haven’t really messed with these much. I rebuilt one about 6 months ago, the bearings were wiped. Thanks for the tip I will look into it tomorrow.

He showed me a saw on his bench. Loosened back av bolts, removed white aspirin sized filter, then removed small brass one, replaced white filter and issue resolved. I have done it to a few now.
I just did this one. Super easy took less than 5 minutes. Hope it helps, certainly won’t hurt anything.
