1978 I believe, a local shop told me thT they were affectionately called "The Great Pumpkin " because of their round design.
Acres has it list as 1975. Either way. It appears to be an updated version of the A77 introduced in 1968( same bore, stroke, carb etc). Very cool old saws. 😎

I think it was mike lee that gave me a 288 hyway piston kit IMG_20230316_152506099_HDR.jpgIMG_20230316_151119341_HDR.jpg
I asked my friend if it ever leaked gas
Always he said
I think the wore out fuel barb and badly leaking decomp valve led to it
Sucking air and frying the piston.
I plugged the decompIMG_20230316_133448503_HDR.jpg
Since it has a Briggs and Stratton pull handle on it
I used a old Briggs lawn mower coil wireIMG_20230316_141819992_HDR.jpg
It worked out great

Started on the second pull IMG_20230316_145244810_HDR.jpg that's the only good aftermarket 288 carb that has worked for me
This one held tune and was easy to adjust in wood

Chinese grinder I bought brushes and a bearing and sealed the hole after the blockade, cleaning and lubrication.

I don’t believe leaking decomp valves would ever ruin any engine. Lack of fuel from a leaking supply circuit will.

If someone wants to explain to me how a decomp valve can allow any air into a running engine I am all ears.
