"On" my bench currently is a John Deere L100 my dad's having me fix up. So far I've put a new valve cover gasket on it, done an oil change, pulled the deck to put new spindles/blades on it, put new front tires on it, and ordered a good used starter for it after the original died. I hate mowers and would much rather work on saws, but somehow I'm fixing this one and going to start work on another one for a buddy on Sunday afternoon. He said he hit something, sheared the blade off, broke the spindle, "Chewed up some of the bolts and stuff under there" and who knows what else. I'm thinking I'll just get a list of parts to order Sunday and tear into it once everything shows up.

Previously I had my brother's 281 hit my bench. "It won't start" turned into a new recoil pulley, all the misc tidbits for the oiler, a new clutch drum setup, possibly some new a/v bushings, the piston needed to be cleaned up, and I don't even know what to think about the "repair" on the full wrap. I think the p.o. had a tree hit it as the wrap is f-ed up and the tank handle was busted when he got it, but idk for certain. It has been tucked away until the parts show up.

I think the word "repair" might be a little strong for whatever is going on with that handle.

Donor saw showed up for my buddys 450. I told the kid I really just needed a good piston. I guess it will work, but his idea of good is not that same as mine...or ours, I suspect. View attachment 292121

Yeah, he said gasket wouldn’t seal...

I’ve only done one clamshell before and no problems but I have heard they can be hard to get to seal. Any pointers guys? I will only be using the piston from this one, not that funky case.

Delivered the SW4200 this evening. Did a house call after work a few houses down for a Briggs Power Built 17 hp on a Poulan Pro rider that wouldn't start. It was our friend good ol dihydrogen monoxide causing the no start. Drained/cleaned the tank, fuel line and carb and with fresh fuel she started right up. Throttle control wasn't working but a tweak of the governor link to the throttle plate had it working again. The link was binding on the top of the carburetor.

was in and out of one of those a dozen times last year. There’s definitely a deliberate sequence to get in and get out.
Never did get a good feel for pulling the carb off the linkage.
Took a bit to figure the linkage out,, once sorted its easy.
Yarding the tank off not knowing its got a barb on the fuel line was a bit of a struggle.
As was getting it back on. Probably take 1/2 as much time second time.
Have to thanks Ray Benson for the paperwork.
