So whoever ported it can cut a pop up piston but can’t cut a cylinder base. Nice:bash:
I thought that too, but then thought maybe they roughen the base to better adhere to the gasket maker. I used to be tempted to do that as it is my habit to do with any kind of gluing.

Some scotchbrite and a little elbow grease followed by some brake cleaner is usually enough to ensure a good clean mating surface.
I like to follow that line of thought as well.

MS461 in for some repairs. Was ported by someone...I have no idea who but here is another example of what happens when you sand the cylinder base instead of cutting it on a lathe. Time to price out a new cylinder kit.

Got started on this little generator last night. Popped on a prime shot but wanted to run away. Pulled carb off and found both sticky throttle shaft and governor linkage. After an hour in the ultrasonic cleaner the throttle shaft moves like new again and some oil on the governor linkage had it working like new again as well. Drained fuel tank and it looked like he was making furniture stain in the fuel tank. Ordered a carb repair kit and I'll clean/flush the tank.

Investigating a leaking crank seal on a TS185, found it like this, not at all in place, just being held up against the case due to the stator plate.

Rough.

I had one of those for a while fun little backyard blaster. Used to ride it down the old trolley track bed and down the power line right of way a bunch. Not real easy on the spinal column in anything rougher than a foot path!! Lol

Resolved to put rings inside and new paint on the outside. This the first saw I’ve seen that requires you to split the crankcase in order to remove the cylinder. From what I can tell it comes apart as three pieces. The case halves and the crank/piston/cylinder assembly. I could use an idea on removing the cam from the crank. I thought I’d push the seal in and get under it with some 2-jawed pullers. Would love to save the seal though. 00AD095C-0D4C-48B4-A6CA-E0B4F4EC0460.jpegBFC4EE8C-967F-48C4-9279-512A5850A172.jpegE22754EF-9FD1-479D-8864-3A54FD1DDA05.jpeg

On the bench today is what I believe to be a Stihl 056 Super. I ended up breaking the saw down into parts for the sake of identification. It has a clear serial number but it doesn’t seem to fit the Stihl format commonly found on these saws. Cylinder bore is 54mm, ignition is SEM electronic.

I had a good day, so far. I went online and scored a complete NOS engine gasket set for the almost 60 year old saw I’m rebuilding. https://www.ebay.com/itm/363010282662
T
