What's a fair price for a cord of cherry?

I'm cutting it out of our woods and the guy who wants to buy if is stockpiling for his side of the road firewood stand. It's getting cut to 16in and split decently small. I'm trying to figure out a fair price. $250?

Not sure on prices out east, but around me, a cord of pine is selling for $300 blocked or $375 split. The same stuff is selling in Jackson, WY (one of the wealthiest cities in America) for $600+.

We are closer to $300 here for a cord of pine, Larch will get a bit more as it is the favorite.

Best comps might be gotten off Craigslist. Usually a lot of firewood for sale there.

I would try marketing it for smoking or BBQing fuel; you could probably get more for it that way.

On the local Craigslist I just saw someone offering a cord of Cherry for $800 delivered. Oak & Madrone average $450-$500. Nobody seems to sell Fir or Pine.

I'd be tickled to get $300 for seasoned oak in semi rural Pa. My best (long time) customer gets his for $210. Full cords, 128 cubic ft. I do it to get out of the house and run my toys. Not really any sort of profit center if you know what I mean...

Some fool here would sell it for $110. Why I don't get excited to sell firewood. Dunno if there are a bunch of double dippers or if the people really value their labor this low?

Old Saying "LAST BID AT THE AUCTION? Now a days the auctioneer can complicate things.
We had a guy up from Arkansas and told me he preferred Black Walnut for smoking. He never lasted long. Why I don't know.
I like the CL idea but if you break that cord down smaller you may double you profit per cord if it is worth your hassle.. A lot of commercial smokers get picky and only want Hickory yet don't realize Pecan will be hard to discern from Hickory. Hardwood assoc buy either/or as the same. I am a back yarder and prefer Dry Mulberry for most smoking but the Wife and I strongly prefer Cottonwood for fish It has a More mellow yet noticeable flavor smoke. I read that Alaska smokers dry/smoke Salmon with Aspen. Somewhere Corn cobbs for fish. Plenty of them around Nebraska but never tried 'em
My Brother Had a Lot of Cherry in Kansas and liked to smoke with it. Says he misses it in Iowa and now he uses a pallet grill and just buys what he wants.

Alder is what the natives supposedly have always smoked salmon with here. If it adds flavor I can't tell.

Southern lower MI I've had no issues getting $125/face for an oak/hickory mix with a little beech and ironwood in there. But I have had it c/s/s for two summers and I advertise it as such. If you sell stuff that doesn't smoke and hiss in an open fireplace you can probably ask about anything.

It would seem that many do not know that the wood isn't supposed to emit steam when in the stove. Or possibly do not care. I can understand that buyers get jaded after buying less than quality firewood but then they expect quality wood to be of same price as the rest. I now have 3 year covered stock that I sell bags of. I will pull a truck bed or two out of it for a friend in need but have otherwise abandoned bulk sales. Nothing less than sugar maple, BTU wise. Sitting on 2-1/2 cord of that at 16". I use 20" splits at home. I recently processed a good sized red maple at 16" that should be ready next fall.

Do any of you have regular customers that buy a year or two ahead, that you can deliver to straight from the woods?

Well that gets a . I have friends that don't think anything about this year's wood until the first frost hits. SMH To ask them to pay for it and sit on it till dry is a bridge too far I'm afraid. Personally I'm putting up 2029 wood at the moment. Beech and chestnut oak so far. I do have the luxury of my own woodlot to pull from where others do not (and room to store). What I don't have is time for is processing the extra 10-15 cord per year that would allow me to aggressively pursue sales.
